Yesterday I made a trip to a LFS (well about 30 miles away) lol to pick up a couple little clowns for my reef setup. I saw this brilliant green coral. Now I'm new to corals, but I've been doing my share of research. I thought, now that looks like a hammer coral. I asked the gal if it was indeed the label on the tank it was in. She replies yes. Of course I said I'll take it. I get him all settled into his new home and start researching more. Come to find out I was right the gal was wrong! She sold it to me as a sebae anemone! $24.99 SCORE! Looked up some pricing for the size 4 to 5 inches range, $70 to $150 wow!

Wow, their ignorance was definitely your score!! Well done :)

Thanks! :)
So it looks to be a wall hammer, how do they expand on growth? Will their own base grow bigger, or if I put a rock touching it will it extend onto another rock

It is wall hammer and will extend out. The skeleton will just get longer and or bend if something is in its way. I have both wall and branching. Walls grower slower and are not as hardy as branching types. That may be why i like walls better, more of a challenge.

Wouldn't you call this dishonest? If you thought it was mislabeled why not just let the LFS know. It is tough enough to stay in business competing against all the online companies as it is let alone customers taking advantage of a misinformed employee.

To me its the same as finding an original Picasso painting at a garage sale for $5. Do you inform the person selling it that its worth thousands? Or do you smile as you hand them $5?

OP....Very nice find!

To answer your question: Euphyllia are LPS, they make their own skeleton. Give it room to grow and so it doesn't sting other corals. Strong light will bleach them out; it's a medium light coral. You cannot feed them too much, they are always hungry. Feed it a small particle food like Coral Frenzy every other day and it will grow better and be healthier.

So, you think screwing a store out of a few bucks is the same as screwing a home owner out of millions? I don't think I could ever get my point across to you.

What happens when the OP is in serious trouble one day and really needs the help of the LFS (this is no where near as far fetched as your example)? If the LFS figures out the mistake and decides they are not available to help and the OP loses livestock due to that decision would you then think the OP is honorable by coming here and bashing the LFS?

What is the difference between a person walking into the LFS and steals from them outright and the OP walking livestock out the front door for a price he KNOWS was way too low. Both are theft, only difference is one person paid a little money to disguise his dirty deed.

I completely disagree with you. The man just got lucky, It's not the customers responsibility to inform the store. Most LFS are overpriced anyway. They mark up two three times higher than they should.
I wouldn't call OP dishonest for this, and I definitely wouldn't bash him on his thread for a one time good deal.

I have good relationships with the LFSes i buy at. So if an employee was ignorant of a piece i would correct them. After years of friendship i know how hard they work. Now if i was at a place where i had no relationship with i would like to think i would inform but there is a bit of doubt in my mind. But would feel bad if employee got in trouble, or say the employee should be better informed on his job.

I agree.

if i recall right this wasnt a thread about stealing or bashing dib for maybe less than perfect morals.. its about that he got a gorgeous hammer for 25$. nice find.

A lot of times the employee is just going by what it came in as. Distributors make mistakes all the time. Most LFS will catch the mistake and mark it accordingly but if they don't they were still just charged as a Sebae.

Would you consider this OK...OP walks in and sees a sebae in the tank. He notices that the label says it is a wall hammer and has price labeled. The OP buys the sebae for the higher price. We then read on the forums where the LFS employee tells us of this score where he had an uninformed customer come in and pay a ton of extra money for the 'nem? Would you pay the employee on the back and tell him he was lucky?

Employees don't have forums to go on and discuss their sales, Lol. A customer making a bad purchase Not the employees fault. The person making the purchase specially in this hobby is responsible for doing their due diligence before purchasing any equipment or livestock.

Employees can come here just like you and I. LOL, so your answer looks like you would think the employee "scored" in my example.

Great score. If you work at a saltwater shop and can't distinguish between a wall hammer and a sebae anemone You should not be working there. It is on the employer to train their employees and who's to say the employer wasn't the one to label it. You got a beautiful coral

Yes, it is a training fail. I think this falls under the same thing when a local guy here bought 2 brand new MP10 powerheads off the local PetCo for under $100... In the end, the deal was there to be had and the customer wins. In today's world you don't hear much anymore about actual customers getting the a good deal.

It would only be dishonest if the person knew EXACTLY what it was and hinted the employee to the incorrect price. That or moved the labels.

Beautiful hammer by the way!
