Yes, it is a training fail. I think this falls under the same thing when a local guy here bought 2 brand new MP10 powerheads off the local PetCo for under $100... In the end, the deal was there to be had and the customer wins. In today's world you don't hear much anymore about actual customers getting the a good deal.

It would only be dishonest if the person knew EXACTLY what it was and hinted the employee to the incorrect price. That or moved the labels.

Beautiful hammer by the way!

PetCo does not Sell in Vortechs.

They deal in low end stuff only catering to Noobs.

So, you think screwing a store out of a few bucks is the same as screwing a home owner out of millions? I don't think I could ever get my point across to you.

What happens when the OP is in serious trouble one day and really needs the help of the LFS (this is no where near as far fetched as your example)? If the LFS figures out the mistake and decides they are not available to help and the OP loses livestock due to that decision would you then think the OP is honorable by coming here and bashing the LFS?

What is the difference between a person walking into the LFS and steals from them outright and the OP walking livestock out the front door for a price he KNOWS was way too low. Both are theft, only difference is one person paid a little money to disguise his dirty deed.

If a LFS doesn't know the difference between a Sabae nem and a hammer coral, they have no business being in the business.

Would you consider this OK...OP walks in and sees a sebae in the tank. He notices that the label says it is a wall hammer and has price labeled. The OP buys the sebae for the higher price. We then read on the forums where the LFS employee tells us of this score where he had an uninformed customer come in and pay a ton of extra money for the 'nem? Would you pay the employee on the back and tell him he was lucky?

If someone buys a Sabae nem thinking its a wall hammer. They have no business keeping a wall hammer or a sabae nem in their tank.

Both sides have merit. But if you live under the employee should have known. Then you also have to live with buying mislabeled coral and it turns out to be a fraction of the price you paid since you are ignorant of what you bought. If store looses because of ignorance than you cant complain when it happens to you.

Whoa! I finally got time to read all the replies. I blame nobody. I don't think the gal in the store was trained properly for the fish dept. It was crazy busy and she was just trying to help. Did I mention I'm NEW to learning about corals. I've only seen photos of cool looking stuff. I didn't even know the deal I got until I got home and did more research to see how to properly care for it. Their picture tag showed something kind of green and I didn't see any kind of tag for hammer. Not only that but it looked quite stressed. Actually I don't think very many of their tags were correct. After looking at my receipt when I got home, come to find out my ocelerose were rung up as Clarks $2 cheaper. If you ask me, they just need to get it together.
So thanks to those of you who like what I got, and those who think I stole it, well sorry I did know any better.
Oh yea, did I mention I'm still learning. lol

That's not necessarily true. The petco by me carries vortechs. They dont sell many but they do have them in stock.

Nice find by the way on the hammer. It is the responsibility of the store to know what they are selling and price it accordingly.

I really don't think he got THAT good of a deal. You're not going to get much over $50 for that hammer IMO

I would say 1/2 is a good deal. But true a green wall at that size goes for $40-60. $20-30 if it is branching. Size is measured at skeleton not extended tentacles.

Yes, they typically deal in low end stuff, however our local PetCo carried Vortecs for awhile. They don't carry them anymore though.

Why do you feel it is only dishonest under those conditions only? It is clear the customer knew what the coral was and knew the price was incorrect. Once he decided to pay for the coral at a price he knew was incorrect he was being dishonest. The hammer is gorgeous but it seems like a lot of you are fine screwing someone else. Karma will come around.

Why ignore the question? This has nothing to do with whether a person has any business keeping saltwater livestock.

Why have you hijacked this thread and turned it into a moral bashing issue?

I was just trying to say that people need to do research before buying a coral. Clearly this guy had done some research so he was able to see a good deal. I wouldn't put anything in my tank before I know what it is

If the LFS purchased it from its vendor then no one was hosed over. If the LFS ordered a sebae nem then they probably would have labeled the tank as such. Most stores have an invoice with their order when it comes in. I doubt that the LFS priced the coral for a loss

wow, interesting twists and turns here. Congratulations on getting a good deal. To those of high moral authority - I believe the op said he was new and thought he may be right about the actual name of the coral - it was not done in the spirit of screwing over the store, he lucked out and got a good deal.

+1000 This guy was just sharing what he got and was proud of his newest addition. It's a shame the way his thread got hijacked.

to the OP, congrats on your new addition! Great find!

I have never seen a PetCo with Vortechs.

Every PetCo I have been to does not even have Koralia's Let alone Vortechs.

There are actual LFS I have been to that do not have Vortechs.

I apologize. I misunderstood the intention of the OP. To me it sounded as if the OP did his research, saw a coral that was mis-identified and paid a lower price and came here to tell us that he got one over on the LFS. It is a great looking coral and I hope it continues to grow and flourish. Again, I apologize since that may not have been the intent of the thread.
