Self-piercing saddle valves and RO units

I wish there was something in the packaging of RODI units that include saddle valves that they should be the very last resort after attempting all non-permanent plumbing options. I just don't see the need to make permanent holes in your plumbing, whether you own your residence or not.

Updating this project, I've installed a drain line for the waste water so no more snaking a hose up through the kitchen cabinets and into the sink (props to Kat at the Naperville Menards for making it easy). I've also purchased a 35 gal ace roto mold tank for RO water. Eventually I will 'T' the water line to an ATO container (not yet purchased) and the 35gal container. For the meantime I want to concentrate on using the bulkhead to install a pump in-line that will be 'T'ed off and valved with one leading back into the tank (for mixing) and the other to a hose (for filling the sump).

1) do these bulkheads accept schedule 40 pvc? Or should I order bulkheads?
2) I believe its a 1" bulkhead , if I do replace the bulk head should I go with a narrower diameter or is it just as well to reduce down the existing bulkhead.
3) What is the best pump to use for mixing purposes? Are some brands better for being externally mounted? Should I spring for a ceramic shaft? The sump will be 36" so I don't need an overly powerful pump.
4) I'm not ready to use a float valve to control water production, is a standard valve ok for the RO line? I'm tired of half-crawling into the crawl space to turn it on and off.

5) any 'gotchas' associated with externally plumbed pumps.
