In my 100g I feed once or twice every day. I also have a big protein skimmer, a bioreactor, filter socks and do weekly water changes. If I see algae start showing up I usally cut back on how much coral food I am putting in. In a smaller tank I would split the food into smaller portions and feed everyday. I am always worried the fish will get hungry and start eating really expensive things in the tank. I have tried 3 mandarins in my 100 gallon tank and 2 have died, the 3rd looks like it is starving even though I rotate rocks from the sump to the tank that are covered in pods. I would skip the mandarin just because they are really hard to keep and I would rather spend money on corals and fish that have a much better chance of living.
On my 29 I have a hang on the back filter, do weekly water changes, feed everyday and keep sps in it. If you see nuisance algae showing up cut back a little on the feeding and do a little larger water change every week.
