I hear what you’re saying about lighting and flow. I’ve had the same experience with most corals... low flow = less encrusting. This is the only coral in my tank that shot straight up, so who knows. What lighting? How much flow?
Mine do the opposite. Encrust FOREVER. A friend's tank has less flow and less lighting (leds vs my T5 with led bars) and his do exactly what you're describing. They grow vertical very quickly.

I started this SC Orange Passion from a small 1 in frag around July 2019. I have had great growth but how the heck do I pull the orange out of the polyps? Mine seem to stay somewhat green. Frag is 4+ inches now.
Parameters are as follows 400ish par at peak, po4 0.05, no3 5-10ppm, alk 8.5, Ca 450 Mag 1600
Any tips on getting better polyp color?
Have you guys done a icp test lately? For anyone looking for more color or growth I suggest trying KZ coral system its a 4 part system you dose once a week, each component targets a different color and/or growth. I have used it for years and when I first started I pulled out more yellow and orange for sure. Also curious about polyp coloration. I tend to have trouble getting oranges and reds out of polyps that I see in the same corals in others’ tanks.
Yeah I do the ATI test. Had a few things off that have been corrected but nothing to major.Have you guys done a icp test lately? My eyes are burning... so much color!I want to see your orange passion colonies, like a post a few days ago I'd like to know your nutrient levels too.

My flow is pretty rippin. I have an 86 gallon tank (30x30x22) with 2 mp40’s and 500 gph return with flow educators. Until recently had a 1k gyre running. Lighting is also pretty strong - a combination of a 250 watt mh, 4 t5’s, and 2 reefbrite strips. My OP is getting about 400 par. I uploaded another photo with the reefbrites on this time... it makes the orange polyps glow even more.
