So a while back I purchased a rainbow bubble tip anemone. He used to look like this :

When I first put it in my tank I placed him low with the knowledge that if he didn’t like it there it would move. The problem was, it didn’t. It lodged itself in a hole and stayed there for a long time.

I left him alone and over time it lost most if not all of its color and started to shrink. And eventually it started to move. Once in a while it would move an inch or two to a new hole. Eventually it got on some sort of kick and decided to move way more than it had keeping an upward trend. Eventually I spotted it in a situation where I could easily and safely capture it and expedite his journey to the top. Where it found another hole and readjusted. After it started to show its face again it started to color back up again and the tentacles started to slightly grow again. Recently it dec

as for feeding I never really had a regiment but I would try to get some of the mysis shrimp or any of the meaty foods I fed to my fish to fall onto the anemone.

today he looks like this:

this him moments after giving him his first chunk of silverside.

what can I do to return him to his original size?

New to BTAs but I know my flower nem will sometimes shrink into himself for a bit after grabbing some mysis. I would just give him time!

How long have you had him overall? Also refrain from touching him anymore unless you think he’s dead/dying and you are permanently moving him out. Touching stresses out all nems.

Need to correct mg if yr test is accurate that is pretty high , otherwise I don’t see anything alarming , just keep stability and higher nutrients for nem to grow , I would probly feed it some mysis twice a week

According to a previous post I got him mid October last year.

The problem is I have no idea why it’s going up. June 8th was the last time I tested before today and that result was 1740. And that was befor my water change this week.
I’m using the new Hanna magnesium checker

He’s definitely has an algae or Dino outbreak going on based on the color/bubbles.
There’s no bubble on the rock. Just a bit of sand from my hectors goby sifting. The algae in the pic is actually just the stuff on my glass. It’s in a particularly annoying spot to get to by hand and the magnetic algae scraper doesn’t get everything.unless you’re talking about the first pick in which yeah I had a bit of an algae issue, but that was back in November.

same spot today:

This is pretty normal for me after feeding anemones. They look good immediately after eating, once it has digested, they shrivel, and then poop it out.

This isn’t just an after eating thing. It’s an all the time thing. It no longer has the longer tentacles from the first pic

Oh my bad, I read above "today he looks like this" after feeding silverside. Btw, a lot of the anemone experts don't feed silverside because they speculate it could cause bacteria infections because of the multiple freeze thaw cycles. They typically feed it human grade seafood (shrimp or scallop you buy at the fish store that doesn't smell fishy). Why don't you do a water change?

I did my water change Tuesday this week. And the silverside are from hikari so they Should be safe. But maybe I’ll try the shrimp to be safe.

That was the point, that brands like hikari because they're not human grade may go through multiple freeze thaw and isn't treated as stringent as human seafood. You can buy fresh seafood, cut it up in small chunks and then freeze it.

Your anemone could also have an infection. There's a protocol here on R2R for treating sick anemones with ciproflaxin

Ah I was thinking that people were getting there silverside from like a bait store or something. This was the first time I’ve given my anemone silverside. So I’m sure it doesn’t have an infection (yet).
