12 year old fish, i can’t catch him/her hill has been like this for a few months. Any idea what’s wrong?

Will need pic under white lighting to clearly see pigments and full skin but appears to be skin erosion associated with HLLE but until it can be seen clearer- Its a guess. I see the gill plate has also been reduced in size
Is this old man still eating?

It would be great if could post a video - or post a descriptions of what you mean. The fish looks off - true - it could be old age or a neurologic issue. unless you have added more to the tank

Has fish been exposed to copper or high levels of carbon recently? If not , could be Hexamita especially if nitrate recently had increased

there is an obvious gill infection/injury - and to me it seems like there is a velvet-like 'clouding' on the skin. certainly that gill is not normal - it may be a tumor, or something else - if nothing else has been added to the tank.

My take on this is the fish is simply at “end of life”. The skin is dull and it is very thin. The material protruding from the gill is either a neoplasm or goiter….both are seen in long term captives. I do not see any treatable disease here…. Sorry.

Thanks, I know this old guy was not going to live for ever. I have just let him be figured stress of trying to catch him and put him in quarantine would kill him

I'm curious - and of course it's based on the photo - do you think there could be more there - i.e, cloudiness , etc. suggestive of something else?

Could also be a concurrent Mycobacterium infection (another old fish disease). Since nothing has been added to this tank for many years and the other fish are ok, I ruled out protozoans and metazoans.
