skimmer refugium what do yall think?

I'd think for a 30 gallon it might be fine. Seems a little pricey for what it is though. Try getting a used skimmer off the forums if you're on a budget. Also, depending on your plans for the tank, neither a skimmer nor refugium are absolutely necessary.

What kind of tank is it? What other filtration are you running?

its a 30 gallon reef tank with a marineland penguin bio-wheel 50 but i was thinking about going with the 70. do you think the 70 would be a better choice? thanks for all the help.

the tank isnt up and running yet. im about a week away from start up just trying to get my ducks in a row.

You are really going to need more filtration than just the penguin bio wheel, it looks like something more for freshwater really.

I would check bulk reef supply or marine depot for a HOB skimmer, but keep in mind they don't work as well as in tank/sump skimmers. 40lbs of live rock is great more is always better. What kind of budget do you have?

pretty tight budget and i know the filter is average at best thats why im trying to make up with everything else. just wanna make sure i get the right equipment. i was really hoping it would work well but from the feedback it doesnt seem like it will be. my next option will be hob skimmer pref a smaller one how my setup is. what do you suggest?

Does your tank have chambers in the back for filtration? I have never used a HOB anything, but I'll look around the Web to see what I can find.

That also kind of looks like you could add some small media bags like GFO,Carbon, maybe a poly filter to that small chamber where the sponge is.

Well, a used Remora is an obvious option if you wanna stick with that format. Easy to find used if you have a little patience. HOB isn't the only way though - check Tunze's in-tank skimmers as well as their Reefpack 250 combo. Possibly the best solution out there, but not as cheap as a used Remora. ;)
