skimmer refugium what do yall think?

Well, a used Remora is an obvious option if you wanna stick with that format. Easy to find usedif you have a little patience. HOB isn't the only way though - check Tunze's in-tank skimmers as well as their Reefpack 250 combo. Possibly the best solution out there, but not as cheap as a used Remora. ;)

i really like the 250 combo. do you think i will still need my hob marineland filter with that?

If you already have that filter yes you can use it but I wouldn't buy it for a saltwater tank just my opinion

is it possible to over filter? do you think ill have enough filtration after that purchase? i can see the light at the end of the tunnel on this project just trying to make sure i do it right the first time.

No I don't think its possible to over filter. Keep in mind that some people have Huge filtration systems ( just look at some of the members tanks). Just remember you will need live rock also which is bio filtration.

thanks i appreciate it and ill def check out some members tank pics and ill keep you posted on the tank and thanks for all the help. R2R and the members truly are helpful.

pretty tight budget and i know the filter is average at best thats why im trying to make up with everything else. just wanna make sure i get the right equipment. i was really hoping it would work well but from the feedback it doesnt seem like it will be. my next option will be hob skimmer pref a smaller one how my setup is. what do you suggest?

Skimmers are certainly beneficial, but not critical in a small tank, and here is why. If they're a pain in the butt to manage and get them to work, it won't work right, you won't use or will wind up with junk flowing back into the tank. With dedication and large water changes (more frequently), you can often eliminate the need for a skimmer.

There is honestly not much to offer (that is reasonably priced) for small tanks. Also, if you're just starting up, you're not going to even NEED a skimmer for a couple of months at the very earliest. I would pass on it. Keep shopping, ask for advice. My LFS has recommended a very small HOB Rio skimmer and it's under $50.

As far as filtration, extra live rock will help balance everything out, but you may need to look at more flow as you go along. Flow will help break up crap too. It's all going to depend on the residents of your tank, ultimately. Like I said, I'd let it pass and keep looking.

i plan on getting two powerheads to help with flow. hopefully thats enough

I don't have any powerheads in either of my tanks I would save your money for your filtration, maybe look into a sump

I say go for it, just change that pump that it brings to a rio 800, add cheato to the refugium chamber with a light and your good to go. Ive used several of those skimmer refugium combos and they work great. Although, you can get that same exact filter at aquatraders.com for about $25 cheaper. check it out

It says the rio is for a tank up to 30 gallons. You think itll be enough?

I ran a HOB refugium on my 26g for 3yrs. It worked great for it's purpose. Added an extra 3g to my volume, gave me the option of growing some awesome chaeto [emoji2] Check these ones out! I ran the medium. CPR Aquafuge.
