Skimmerless SPS tanks

+1 to good husbandry there's a reason ppl do water changes. If you feel like its worth risking your livestock go for it but you will rarely see a tank that gets water changes and tested frequently that crashes

I have went through a number of reef aquariums with and without skimmers. I have the most success to be when using a skimmer a little oversized and with more regular feeding. I actually do not use any other filtration with the exception of flow and live rock.

we can't all be Paul Baldassano. Though, he'd probably take the dinos out to a nice dinner, he's friends with just about all the stuff everyone considers 'bad'! lol

I would collect in Loch Ness if I thought I could get a few Loch Ness Monsters fry

I was out of town on business. Came back to a 125 heavily stocked SPS tank that looked like someone dumped 5 gallons of milk in it. White, cloudy, almost all sps died. The only thing that happened was the skimmer stopped working for a few days. I couldnt believe it. Everything else, the temps, pumps, lights, powerheads were working and fine. It was the skimmer that stopped working and only thing I can think of is a colony or two died and set off a chain reaction to all the other SPS.

And before you say 'it can't be done', just stop it. kgoldy's tank full of neglect - Page 84 - Members Aquariums - Nano-Reef.com Forums (hate to link to other forums, but this is the best example I have ever seen)

No water changes in two years, no skimmer for longer than that, and parameters that ended up measuring out to this:

Check out those colors, and growth can only be described as 'explosive'. No dosing other than saturated kalk for topoff, and fish are fed twice per week exclusively with NLS pellets. Chaeto is removed from the refugium once per month, and that's all the export that goes on.

Absolutely remarkable. I think I'm going to ignore the heck out of my tank and see if it ends up looking like that lol!

Anyone else know of any awesome skimmerless tanks?
dang that's some wicked growth
