i just installed an SN127 DC protein skimmer made by SKIMZ. I know that there is a break in period. The problem is the skimmer is extremely loud. It’s supposed to be very quiet. Is this because it’s breaking in or is there a problem?

Thanks!

I've seen these skimmers I don't consider them loud.. I consider my Reef octopus loud as all hell though!

If it makes noise during break in period then its gonna make noise after break in period. If its a jet line sound coming from the air intake try adjusting the air going into the silencer or adjusting your skim line. Keep the skim line where the collection cup starts you'll get skim after awhile in good quantity without stripping too fast (wet skim). Move it higher as needed depending on your phosphates and nitrates. I ran my skim line way to high and was forced to feed overtime when all I had to do was move the skim line down.. When organics are present in the water it will bubble up and push it out anyways so don't go to high until needed.

Thanks for all the help! It’s an upgrade to my old skimmer that came with my tank and looking forward to it being broken in. As far as the pump goes I will have to call brs or support and see if I can get a replacement. With the cabinet shut I can hear it all the way downstairs lol.

few minutes ago I just replaced my air intake for my reef octopus. I added a SKIMZ silencer. Try reducing the air flow alot (which will increase skim line), therefore need to adjust the valve so it drop down. You'll still skim fine and won't hear it as much!

Yeap - based on your picture I can see your letter probably too much air into your skimmer and because of this you probably have less flow going into your skimmer. play around with it and don't fear you wont skim enough you'll get more less bubbles but more contact time and at the end of the day just test your nutrients and if they stay stable or in reasonable levels just let it be. If nutrients rise then you can let some more air in if adjusting the line does not work..

I just picked up one of these. How long did it take for you to get this tuned in? Mine has an incredible amount of LARGE bubbles in the neck. Any advice? What water level is yours at?

^^^^ Is it brand new? If so it is breaking in.

If the bubbles are large at the neck try closing the screw for the air silencer in 1/4 turn increments, wait a few hours after each turn though.

I will thank you.

It is about 3 days old. I realize there is a break in period but it just keeps overflowing and has very large bubbles in the neck.

Remove the lid and let it run and when it starts to come down you can turn it down.

So we are now at about a week since it has been introduced into there system. It still continues to overflow. I have placed the water level right under the collection cup and still within an hour or so overflows like crazy. Nothing is being introduced into the water that should cause this.

I have it at 9 right now but have tried multiple speeds. Not even sure what the pump speed is for anyway.

Yeah, that never worked for me!
Try setting it to 6 and closing the air screw by 50%.

I will try that.

The water level looks great the. After about an hour it starts going nuts.

What is the air screw even do? Seems like it doesn’t do anything.

I just looked after setting it to 6 with the 50% and the microbubbles are easily maybe an inch or 2 above the pump and then huge bubbles pushing all the way up. It’s crazy how sensitive this is.

The air screw open will give you a more turbulent and larger bubbles in the neck, you don’t really want that.

Mine isn’t even close. Notice where my microbubbles start.

What depth are you in? I’m at about 7.5 inch.
