Small bit of blade missing in tank

I dropped a screw in my 125g didn't see where it went. Got one of those extenda-magnets from hardware store found it in a few minutes

Auto parts store has them like oreileys AutoZone I think Wal-Mart has them also in the tool or auto department

Side note look for one you can bend the head on to get under rocks and such

Sweat not its harmless I purposefully rusted one in my ten year old pico among sps and lps to make a fellow nano reefer in your shoes feel better the thread is in Randy's Chem forum here somewhere last year

All you did was add some gfo to the tank

Did you verify that the blade is actually magnetic? There are some grades of stainless steel that will rust and are not magnetic. I would test a magnet on the blade piece you have if you haven't already done so.

Try attaching to a piece of rigid tubing, it will make it easier to get into tight spaces. I did this one time with a pump magnet to find a screw I dropped in my tank once.

About 75% +/- 5% iron (as Brandon says...GFO once it's oxidized), 11-18% chromium, 5-11% nickel. There are uncommon forms of stainless steel that substitute copper for the nickel and those could be a problem but I doubt those would be used for scalpels as the copper is substituted to increase electrical and heat conductivity which isn't a desirable trait for a scalpel.

Iv been trying to find out what they are made of but no luck yet
Just wanna know if they have any copper in them , like what saltyhog said
My tank looks so bad today ,not from the scalpel but for me pulling it apart
Off to the Lfs In a min for water and putty plus im gonna grab one of the magnet on a rod things and poke about in a few holes

I work in Surgery as a First surgical assistant.
The blade you are using is called a number 10 blade.
They are made from S.S. These blades are obviously single use only in the OR.
I use them all the time for fraging.
I only use these blades 2 or 3 times before tossing them (obviously these are very cheap for me (like free).
These blades can snap easily because of thickness.
The piece that broke off is part of the scalpel handle mounting lock.
It has no sharp edge on it. Knowing how big the piece you lost is I would not worry about it, it will corode very very slowly.
If you had broken part of the cutting edge it would be worth going after just the keep something from injuring itself.
I would only use it in your tank when no other option is available, these are meant cut skin and are ultimately very fragile if they would happen to hit rock. I know because I did a few tests running into rock on purpose. The sharp cutting edge broke almost 10% of the time.
If you have to use it in the tank to cut a frag go slow.
I think yours broke because it was getting old. Once it hits the saltwater for the first time I would not keep it for more than 6 months.
The guy who own's my LFS has had his for quite a while with no problem so time of use is your call.
Just saw a question about copper content of these blades. They have no copper in them according to our scalpel blade sales rep.

name a material used in extremely high end scalpels that is not steel nor plastic nor metal at all and they produce the cleanest cuts over any form of metal. least scarring of any form of incision blade is....
