Smoking or vapeing round tank?

I vape around mine all the time and haven’t had any ill effects

Wait...I can't have candles around the tank? I don't mean a seance worth of candles but do you avoid candles in the same room? Must research....I've already blocked them from the critter room (ugh which could really use them for the rats; gawd rats smell and yes I clean their cages, ha!)

I wander if a Triton test would pick up anything related to smoking near the tank?

I don’t smoke but would imagine that any chemicals in the air would end up in the water. I guess carbon might help..?

It absolutely will get in the tank. The VG or PG liquid is mostly fine, but the aromas might not be, and there are so many of them that there's no simple answer.

It looks rad to blow clouds at the Kessils. If my snails are lazy I blow some into the skimmer air intake to stimulate grazing.

Not 100% proven, YET! I’m sure it will be tho. However a condition called “popcorn lung” has been linked directly to vaping. Given the choice I’ll keep my Marlboros!
Thats ridiculous, theres been a handful of cases of the condition youre describing (bronchiolitis obliterans). Should be investigated much more extensively but to compare to the obvious hazards of combustibles is silly. Ive treated several younger smokers for spontaneous pneumothoraces but you will never hear about those because its not sensational anymore, do yourself a favor and switch over. You dont wanna be tethered to an oxygen tank for the rest of your life trust me.

When I first started repairing TV's and Stereo equipment many years ago. During the days of people smoking constantly in their homes. I always hated working on a piece of equipment from a heavy smoker's home. The whole TV inside and out would be covered with tar-like someone had poured corn syrupy. The tar would cause the electronics to short out over time and then it would trap dog or cat fur in the tar. It was a miss and made most units unrepairable because of it. Needless to say, it stopped me from every smoking. The smake will get into the tank for sure as well as everywhere else in the home.

Unfortunately, I still smoke cigarettes and can definitely say that I have noticed a difference when we smoked inside. Since we moved all smoking to outside or the master bathroom, I don’t have the same junk in my skimmer body. Before there would always be a light tan colored slime/residue on the skimmer body between the lower water level and bottom of the foam line. I believe that any “smoke” that was in the air and getting pulled into the air line of the skimmer was introducing nicotine into the air water mixture and therefore was sticking to the inner skimmer body, similar to when you clean your car or house windows and the yellowish-tan color stain on the cleaning towel.
*(I installed an extra large exhaust fan in the bathroom and also have one of the top electric air cleaners on my HVAC because I know it could still travel thru the house)

You can say there’s no such thing as fish smoke,
Butt as for me and Grandpa,
We Believe!

I will certainly look into it. The articles I have read stated this info with reference back to what appeared as legit medical reports. I had thought about trying vaping/ e-cig, if it were “safer” or a means of weening away from smoking altogether. Chantix(?) didn’t really didn’t seem to work and felt like I actually wanted to smoke more! Thanks for the heads up!

I used to smoke, never in my house though, I got off by vaping nic salts, currently weeing off vaping with toothpicks I soaked in cinnamon oil.

The popcorn lung thing is theorized to be caused by certain flavor additives used by juice companies, mostly the cereals and desserts, if you just stick with fruity stuff you should be good.

Either way vaping is MUCH less damaging that cigarettes IMO.

Honestly, ive had very little luck w traditional nicotine replacement products. Maybe a handful of pts have quit w gum or Nicotrol inhalers. Never had luck w Chantix or Wellbutrin, lots of reports of vivid nightmares and worsening anxiety w Chantix though. I do however have had good luck convincing pts to switch to e-cigs. Dont know what the difference is but that's just an honest observation over many clinical years. The long term effects are not known of course, but its been used heavily for 25-30 yrs and no reports of any malignant transformation or other concerning sequelae. Im not sure the FDA will ever clear but its unfortunate because watching people wilt from COPD is terrible.

I spoke to my neighbor who is a heart/lung specialist, but not a reefer or marine biologist. I also showed him this thread. He said that there has been research done on the effects second hand smoke has on animals in the home, and there is a correlation between higher incidents of issues with household pets, in a home where someone is smoking.

I'm not sure how that directly relates to a reef tank, but he was of the opinion that the smoke from cigarettes is toxic, and that at some level, over time, it would only make sense that it enters a fish tank.

His other comment was that some of the folks posting here were making an effort to not smoke near their tank, for fear of harming it. he found this ironic, that a smoker is more worried about a replaceable fish tank, than their non replaceable human life. He was adamant that smoking and vaping is not safe, and encourages all of you to quit. (Just repeating his comments, don't flame me guys)

It's amazing what kind of Willy Wonka things pot heads create to get high. I'd be surprised if nobody uses their reef tank as some kind of bong.
