Snails die but nothing else.

You could cut into any size pieces. Smaller strips won't pull out as much, but good color indicators like water testing kits.

I would cut smaller than Polishing pad, so that good surface contact to water. Yet allowing to flow freely through the section.

How I have the media trays set is ceramic media on bottom with the bio foam on top of that so it's packed full. Then on the top media basket I have the carbon on the bottom the polishing pad on top of that then the purigen on the top with very little room left.

Quick update the fifth snail that I thought was going to die was up on the glass all night and when I left for work this morning it was back on it's back and looked like it was trying to come out of it's shell. I flipped it back over so I'll see how it is tonight.

In your case anywhere water contacts it, but doesn't create resistance of canisters flow.
Could strip it or blocks, so flow goes through it easier.

Just make sure doesn't stop motor of canister by clogging intake inside canister. And so small can't identify color to read results.

I could always replace one of the initial filter sponges with it.

Unrelated but I love the doggie (pit?) in your icon!
Yeah she's a full bred blue nose pit.

Also as an update 0 copper and 1 snail is still alive but every morning he is on his back and I need to flip him.

Make sure you are not adding the fish store water to your tank when you add new fish. Most fish stores run copper in their fish tanks. Adding it to your tank can kill your snails.

Yeah I don't and I tested 0 ppm for copper

Snails are weird. I have one survivor of 6 that goes into my turf scrubber and eats all day in it! I think the others died due to a few thoughts:

A) bristile worms. Ive seen bristle worms in my tank devour a dead fish in a day!
B) high phos (above .05ppm) inhibits shell growth
C) dinoflagellates poisened them
D) higher temps for colder water snails, used to be 83f now its at 74-78f.

Yeah I hate the rap they have I've rescued quite a few and found them homes and never had one that I didn't like.
You're awesome. Good for you. I rescued an English Bulldog/American Bulldog mix and since I can only bring one dog to work with me every day, I can't get another dog but I'm dying to rescue a pit. One day I will. I'm always checking the local shelters online listings torturing myself, wanting to save them all...

Yeah once I buy a house I will get back to rescues but my landlord won't let me even though I'm on 100 acres. I was only able to in my other homes because the landlord lived no where near, my current one is my neighbor. But...... if I found one on the side of the road or badly treated I'd take it in a second.
