So confused

Thanks you. I probably should has asked the question in a more clear manner. After filter sock - check. But would one reco end it being in a higher flow area if the sump or a lower flow. I don't have a uv light like Dilos Reef mentioned. My sump is filter sock, skimmer compartment and refugium then into return pump. My thought is in fuge for low flow and in slot between fuge and return for higher flow
Your not going to like this, but I really don’t think it matters I could be wrong lol. I would go high flow if I had a choice, and honestly only because I feel it would pass through the bag better… but like I said, that is just my opinion, take it with a grain of salt.

I love em to my own death, so to speak lol.... my tank has Xenia, Kenya Tree both in check as they can spread heavy. More on that technique later.... some of the best are just the basic cheaper mushrooms. They don't get so difficult in terms of keeping under control, very manageable. I would suggest Hairy Mushrooms, or Green Mushrooms to start. In fact I see you down the road in Guelph. I'll drop a few of mine to you for free if you in GTA over next few months. PM me.
Will do! Thank you for the offer!

Here they are the hairy mushrooms in first image, the Xenia and Kenya Trees effectively under control now in second. Nitrate eating machines. All of them

No no I appreciate it. Thanks. My inclination was a higher flow area too.

Carbon will help with the toxins as you add more of the leather type corals. Sometimes some things do not grow together in a system.
Seriously, I have heard some do great with a mixed reef when others do not. Personally, I try to make sure I have a more dominant type reef as I know what they need and it all works great. I have had SPS, gorgs, lps and my large display is softies. By far my favorite I have done. My 40g is lps (frogspawn, trumpets, duncan, torch , acan, and many favia types). I also have clams.

I run carbon through a reactor. They have some nice small reactors that could run nicely on your system. In my gorg system is was very necessary. I do not run carbon however in my lps system.

I experiments with some gorgs and lps and it never turned out well for the lps. Same with my Palua Nepthea and lps (specifically a favia). Always left the favia dying. I was always able to bring it back and try again further away, etc, etc. I gave up and just kept in my lps tank. Now it is a huge piece.

Honestly mixed reefs can be done… I have a 32g Biocube stock light with LPS, SPS, Leathers, Zoas, (softy’s) etc… I started with dry rock (so you can throw biodiversity out the window) but have put plugs from other tanks in my tank…. Maybe that helped idk. I have a refug in the back of the cube, I have always ran chemi pure elite, UV, ATO and Filter floss in the back of the Biocube not in an external sump. I keep it simple. Been going over a year now.

My guess is something’s off in your tank, I can’t believe it just “some systems can some can’t…..”

Ok, we need more info (as others have mentioned). The big clue for me is the 20 anemones in the tank. Typically anemones split either when they are very happy or mildly stressed. I suspect the latter. Also, being able to keep soft corals suggests a high nutrient environment, perhaps even too 'dirty' for the easier of the hard corals.

So my questions would be, are you measuring your parameters with quality test kits, like say Salifert, or are you using API? A reading on phosphate will help to determine if it is a high nutrient issue. Also how are you measuring salinity and what is your source of water?

The photos you show of the acans and candy cane are of corals that are not happy and open. The question being are they staying closed because of water quality issues or fear of the voracious predator waiting for them to inflate?!

My gut says, most likely a nutrient issue, possibly insufficient lighting and when we have adjusted/ruled those out, we will then have to see if the angel will play nice with LPS or not.

Yeah but anemones also taste like crap so the fish leave them alone. I started with softees and i had a coral beauty that ate everything but nems and watermellon mushrooms. Ten years later and i have thousands of each
