So you think your torch corals don't like too much flow? Think again!

Torch corals need lower flow.

we've always had good results with high-medum to High randomized flow for touch corals. They seem their happiest in intermittent high-punchy flow, followed by short periods of swaying calm flow. At least if the measure of "happiness" as it relates to a torch coral is a bigger, more puffy look. :)

Just bc you can blast a torch with flow doesn’t mean that it should be done. We grow coral for aesthetic reasons and having the tentacles flying around all of the place doesn’t bring out the beauty of the coral imo.
thats more of an opinion rather than a fact.

Yes I agree, and I think they do well with higher light and flow, like a sps reef tank, with low nutrient and without direct feeding, and when I mean higher, I think they like a medium/high random flow.

I think frogspawn like low flow, hammers medium flow and torchs medium/high

Maybe what I said above is what worked for the torches from Indonesia, with long and thin tentacles, since I never had much luck with the Aussies.

Here some examples of my flow for torches:

Those are some awesome torches. Never seen a blue one like that before

I didn’t even realize the full size of my torches until they were subjected to higher flow. I was apprehensive at first due to the common myths about them not responding well but they have never looked better and fuller since the change to higher flow.

As mentioned above I think random directional high flow is the key.

What is that yellow torch

Reviving this old thread.

Just went snorkelling the other day and I found torches (Indo variants) growing beside acros. So they can not only handle higher flow but they can also handle high light. The torch that I saw was growing around 3 meters under the ocean surface.
