curious as to your total water volume, and how stocked your tank is and how much you saw nutrients rise. Sorry a lot of questions. I dosed 1/2 gram and my phosphates did a pretty solid jump from 0.16 to 0.28 in about 4 days on the way down now. Nitrate stayed the same at 10ppm. I have 300 gallon moderately stocked. Thanks!

Moderately stocked

Nutrients didn’t rise a lot, but definitely off my baseline. But it’s not the CRT’s fault. Any feed will do it. I just increased my carbon dosing.

Phosphate: 0.22 to 0.28

NO3: 19.4 to 26.2

nice thank you! awesome you are able to dose that much and not see higher bump it totally could have been to much feeding as well the bump just correlated with dosing V3. I am already dropping back down as well but still for me a bit high and a few things seem a littler irritated like one patch of zoas but but others seem to be insanely happy like torches and gonis. Acros also have awesome extension today.

I’m carbon dosing though, so if I took that offline nutrients would rise. Every system is different and has different filtration methods, bioload, etc. For my system at this current stage (2 yr 5mo) 1/2g is working good enough. 1g daily is a little much, but I’m also feeding TDO, Nori, minimal PE Mysis.

A system like Allan’s will be able to handle more because they are much more established, but we know his Nitrates are over 20!!

thank you that helps I was like wow my nutrient export must really stink

I agree on all tanks being different! I thought I had a solid export as I feed really heavy and have a 22 or so fish but for some reason my phos went up and nitrate stayed the same. I just need to dose less so i don’t get spike but Allan said the tank will become more efficient with export. I think if anything my nitrate to phosphate values are off.

My system is also younger at 1.3 years

At 1.3 yrs…it’s still very young. It will only get better as it matures and process more as long as you’re not overfeeding the system.

You see that a lot. NO3 at 60 (classic sign), and they cannot get it down despite feeding “only 1 cube a day.” They just don’t mention the 10 cubes a day and 2 sheets of Nori they fed for 2 years prior to cutting back. You can knock the NO3 down with organic carbon and bacteria, but it will bounce back up almost immediately for months and in some cases over a year. Some reefers have so much crap locked in their sandbed, overflow box, sump, etc…it takes a long time of doing things right to take care of all the buildup. In some cases the sand just needs to be removed to expedite the process.

Agree! I am guilty

I do keep things pretty dang clean here is current system see photo happy to share specs if curious.

My nitrates never budge. If I do reduce feeding my phosphate drops to 40PPB in about a week. I do know I got **** in my sand for sure. That’s why new tank I’m setting up is sandless just ordered everything will be 280 gallons. Thanks for the info.

If you stock enough sand sleeping wrasses and conches you’ll be shocked at how clean your sand bed can be! Siphoned my sandbed the other day and I could still see the bottom of the bucket lol

I do have a couple sleeping wrasses and some conches and sea cucumbers

Interesting is that my acros seem not to care as much about the swing but a few things which are hardy like one of my zoa patches was not a fan it seems of the fast swing form 50ppb to 100ppb

That’s very odd, my zoas have really taken off. Were there any other changes? Fish perhaps?

No changes at all same fish etc. phos is dropping now pretty quick backed off and at 84 ppb which I would imagine shouldnt bug much or anything as we know people run way higher. My other zoas are happy so could just be something strange but they have been very happy otherwise so potentially tying it to swing in phosphate but it could be I just looked at them wrong
