anyone have experience with the ghl mitras or lightbars? They seem sleek and comparable to radions in form factor, and appear to an overall improvement in build quality
 
I have this crazy idea of drawing up with a pipette the bacteria in coral polyps or coral mucus in an attempt to get bacteria that may comprise of the coral holobiont and use that to grow our bacteria concoction.

I was reading this article: The coral microbiome: towards an understanding of the molecular mechanisms of coral–microbiota interactions

Here is a diagram in the research article showing what a coral polyp holobiont may look like:

In the research article, it states the following: "The best-known coral symbionts are select bacteria and members of the dinoflagellate family Symbiodiniaceae (collectively known previously as the genus Symbiodinium)."

The article further states the relationship of the bacteria group with coral as "The coral–Symbiodiniaceae symbiosis is likely highly complex as other endosymbiotic associations. Research indicates that metabolite exchange between Symbiodiniaceae and corals involve sugars, lipids, and nitrogen compounds (reviewed in Davy et al. 2012)."

Therefore if I postulate that if I can somehow use a healthy coral with coral polyps and 'harvest' the bacterial holobiont. Wouldn't it be more beneficial to use these bacteria to grow our bacteria concoction? These bacteria may potentially help embed themselves back into the coral polyp/ coral holobiont and boost the growth of corals also?

Of course there is the risk of growing unwanted or harmful strains as well especially if we harvest from sickly corals which may be infected with bacteria such as vibrio sp.

Just thinking out loud here and hoping if others may have insight into this ideal.

It is kinda like what scientist are doing with fecal transplant with humans. Take gut bacteria from a healthy human and give it to someone else with weaker or no gut bacteria after those individuals took a strong course of antibiotics. These patient's develop C-diff.

Basically if we did a whole tank antibiotic treatment or did a coral dip for pest for too long, maybe those corals have lost the beneficial coral holobiont. So no matter what we try to feed them, they may not have the proper bacterial to help 'digest' the nutrients for coral growth until we transplant good coral bacteria back into them.

Yes I’m aware of stool transplants. I frequently use that analogy lol. Definitely could be scenarios where this technique could be applied. Thats why I do water and live rock transfusions with my systems.

Also one must remember that corals can have distinctive holobionts and can selectively culture microorganisms with their secretions. There are still a lot of advancements and research to be done.

Would you mind sharing how frequent you try to do live rock transfusions? Do you see an increase in coral growth after live rock transfusions?
I have been questioning myself what benefits more when we change our live rocks? I suspect it would be more beneficial for overall tank nutrient reduction of nitrates and phosphates. Also reduce unwanted growth such as cyano, diatoms. I am hoping someone someday can explain to me how bacteria on a rock can increase beneficial bacterial holobiont in a coral.
 
Check out Reefi lights too. Quanta is making the Atlas too those look like they are going to be great.

No not really, most of my tanks are 5+ years old now and really established. It’s more so about the compounded positive effects and feedback loops that we try to influence.
You can also have an awesome tank without any of these techniques too. The water and rock transfusions do seem to aid against rtn events in my experience.
Check out Reefi lights too. Quanta is making the Atlas too those look like they are going to be great.

Dislike the reeffis for the same reason, you're spot on.

I run 2 on my 40, my buddy is running 3 on his new tank IM200 peninsula but will probably need a 4th once everything grows in. Also reefbum runs them as well.
 
hi, in version v1 or v2 did you notice the appearance of cyanobacteria by any chance? perhaps I exaggerated with the dosage of my mix and I kept it below what the manufacturer recommends.
 
Quick update! Been really busy lately, but the systems have been cruising along nicely on my concoction.

Garf Bonsai, photo taken on 9/18. Really cool to see how dozens of polyps developed in this short timeframe and how the new growth tips are progressing. Many are erupting from the base and making great vertical progress.

It’s amazing to see daily growth like this!
