Space Monsters Vs. Strawberry Wines

Ive heard alot of people say there is a differance, but you have too look at them side by side to notice it....

If i owned either or both i would post a picture....

There are tons of threads on this, when they very first came out, that is Space Monsters, every body thought they were the same, however, there are more then 1 diffrerinces in the corals.

1)The Space Monsters have a more splotted pattern to them.
2)Space monsters grow at a faster rate.
3)The Space Monsters have a brighter color to them to my eye
4)The Strawberry wines seem to melt, this happen to the originator of them.

So,other than those there, they seem to look similar, but I can tell the diffirerince from photo to photo.

I haven't seen either personally but.... from this description all I can infer that they were just the same coral growing in two different tanks!! Phenotype is influenced both by genetics and by the habitat.

I have the Strawberry Wines and everyone that sees them in my tank or pictures of them tells me they are the Space Monsters, but I have to tell them I got them from Chelsey.

lol... I think this is just one of these cases where... the ones in power can't agree on a common name... so the corals mysteriously "morph" into two different things. I'm sure a taxonomist would call them both Zoanthus sp.(whichever species they fall into).

by the way martin how are those ppe's looking?

I have heard from a ton of people there is no difference.

A ton of people are in fact wrong - these two polyps are not the same.

Strawberry Wines are molted and smaller in size under the same lighting conditions. Space Monster is splotched with more black. Under my lighting I would say the SW are brighter, but that's a matter of opinion. Let me also say that the skirt of the SW is a darker green under the same lighting as well. I agree with clowns that the SM grows much faster, and the SW tends to melt much more readily than the SM which is a very stable polyp with good growth.

I'm afraid sir that you infer incorrectly. I have both polyps in the same tank, under the same lighting and chemical conditions, and I can assure you as someone who has both that they are not the same polyp. I posted side by side pictures of the two in this thread quite some time ago;

Everyone who tells you that has not seen the actual Space Monster.

Again, I have both of these polyps in my personal tank for over a year. They are both very nice polyps, but they are by no means or in any way the same polyp. I started with 1 polyp of Space Monster and have over 12 polyps now. I've started with multiple pulps of Strawberry Wine on two different occasions. One frag melted with the exception of a single polyp which I've managed to keep alive, and the other is currently receding. Those who say these two are the same are people who have never seen the two polyps side by side. They are making their judgment based on descriptions or poor quality internet pictures. I'd take and post up a more recent picture, but my camera is at work.

I don't mean to come across rudely PR, but just for FYI, I am not one of those in power - I seldom if ever sell polyps. I've heard some say that SM is a paly rather than a zoa, but I'm not sure that I would agree with that, they may indeed both be Zoanthus sp., but they are not the same morph of Zoathus sp. I would equate the difference being more akin to the difference between Eagle Eyes and Whammin Watermelon myself.

I've seen sw's first hand and they don't look like this!

The sm has a splatter and the wines have a solid pink inside... At least mine does...;)

When I first got my sw's, they did have some variation of pink and darker pink. But after keeping them in direct 250 watt mh light, they are a solid pink now.

Hey PR, the ppe's are great.

If SM grow faster I guess I have a whole colony lol what I got as SW's (not from Chelsey) grow at least 1 new polyp every 2 to 3 days lol I went from 1 to 16 in 1.5 months
