Spouses happy?

My mrs is a complete fish tank noob she asked me before i got my set up is this hobby cheap ? I said yeah ofc..... now she calls me a liar ! Although she said it good fot our little one to learn about marine life! So that is my saving grace!

My wife was the one who originally got a tank. Her interest waned through the years. I wasn't interested at first, but now I'm the one taking care of the tanks and writing on forums. She still likes the tanks and will look up fish to get, but thats about it.

I find it key to keep minor maintenance to early morning or late night (top off water, test chemicals, etc), and tell her in advance when I need to do major things (water changes on the 200g system, rescape, frag coral.

"oh yea, it's super cheap, and easy"

My girlfriend enjoys looking at the tank and the feeding response of the lps corals. Especially the scoly. She may get mad a few times on the amount of money I spend on corals but then appreciates them when they start growing. The only problem is she wants all the fish that aren't reef safe (puffers and Angels).

My hubby enjoys looking at the tank and has been a huge help in designing plumbing. He ran all of the pvc under the house so that I could run water from the garage to my tank. Whenever I need help building something he is right there. That is the extent of his involvement. He doesn’t remember the names of anything in the tank, but he also fully supports anything I need or want to buy for the tank as long as it is in our budget. We don’t have any secrets.
I really don’t understand some of the marriages in these posts. If you have to lie about something you are passionate about then I question the stability of your relationship altogether.

I am truly blessed for sure.

I don’t really get it either. It’s really about getting your spouse actively involved in what you do. I think the problem is that some hobbyist will go overboard with 10 fish tanks and buying every new tech toy and exotic coral and that will drive anyone nuts.

I think you may be right. Going overboard on a hobby to the detriment of finances or even the amount of attention you give your spouse isn’t good. I didn’t marry my tanks though lol. Priorities are important to remember. I too am guilty of sometimes spending too much time researching corals or anything reef related, and I don’t mind my dh saying something. He will usually just say how about we do something non reef related tonight? Easy

My wife has no idea how much stuff cost. If she knew how much corals cost she would kick me out of the house lol I always pay cash for everything in the tank. I don’t know how much she pays for shoes and she doesn’t mess with my hobbies

Completely agree

My wife loves that I have a hobby, and doesn't care about how much I spend, but she always hated the blue light and noise in our livingroom. After years of fighting, I finally decided that having it in the livingroom wasn't worth the emotional cost. The tank is now in my home office and all is well. I use webcams to view it in the livingroom, at work, and since I'm going to online school I spend lots of time in my office.

I have a whole other aquarium hobby from my wife also. She loves plants so while I was watching Youtube video's on the TV a few years ago. She saw Takashi Amano video on his nature aquariums. This started me keeping Nature aquariums and planted tanks again. This is what she loves and is VERY interested in this aquarium much more than the reef system.:)

I have 2 tanks, a 210 predator tank and a 32 reef tank. She likes both of them, but says the reef is more interesting. I would tend to agree.

She hates the way I "obsess" over things. Like if one day a coral doesn't open the same or if a fish is acting different.

My wife loves it. Before me she never knew anything about the hobby. When I lost my Lennardi she kept saying "And how much was that fish again" As long as I pay my bills and don"t refinance our house threw my lfs shes ok with it

My wife loves my tank. Doesn't help care for it. But that's ok. I do get a little feedback on some things I buy. Because after 20yrs plus. She's caught onto the price this hobby costs. But she's happy I'm not bar hopping or whatever. I am home and were happy looking at my baby...
