Spouses happy?

My wife HATES it! Complains about it daily....until this thread I though a wife that liked the reef aquarium was a myth...ok...just being cheeky on the myth.

At first she hated it cause i keep checking my parameters when i was cycling then now its mature she likes whatever i have in it but me i want more but she hates the fact that i need a bigger tank.

My wife hated when I spend too much time on it. She likes when I can sell frags to make some money. I am revamping my reefing for better efficiency with upkeep and for propagation. I think I will like this better as well.

My wife likes it for 3 reasons
1) it sits in our "main" room, so I spend more time in there with her instead of golfing or whatever
2) it gives her ideas on Christmas gifts, birthday, etc. - good for me too!
3) it all started because my special needs son enjoyed watching tanks at the doctor's office, but now he can watch at home
Sorry the previous post does not make sense unless quote the original post with reference to no 3 reason.

She liked it at first but now not so much. But knows it keeps relaxed so she tolerates it but grumbles about it lol. But has gotten me gift certificates at my local LFS I go to lol.

Mine loves my tank. but shes figured out. all coral dont cost 20 bucks.. lol also said when i got my new razor led. why is it so bright now. she just shakes her head and i laugh..

My wife loves the tank but if I got rid of it she wouldn't care one way or the other. She does enjoy going with me to pick out corals and looking at all the cool different types. She gives me money on my birthday or special occasion so she has an idea of what things cost. I guess she says as long as I don't put us in the poor house everything is cool.:)

My wife actually bought her setup first, 32 Biocube. When we spotted mine she was the one that said "Go for it". It's pretty awesome when both are on board at the same time. We get to learn together.

My husband is supportive, and being and engineer has put a lot of insight into my system. He enjoys watching everything grow. Now that my euphyllia are crowding my tank, he even bought them a tank of their own, in which he is helping set up. My teenage daughters on the otherhand comment on the time and money.

My wife can’t stand it. Says it’s too messy. What can you do when it’s a cheap setup lol. But I am downsizing and she is happy about it :( if any one has any ideas on where I can get some cheap gear let me know. I’m willing to trade my cheap gear lol.

What is this thing you call "downsizing"? To my knowledge, it has never been attempted in the hobby!

Some of these are funny.

My wife couldn’t be more indifferent about my tank. I’m not even sure she understands that it’s saltwater. I have other hobbies that are more expensive and take me away from home which she wouldn’t mind if I quit.

We were snorkeling in Hawaii and I tired to explain this is what we have in the tank at home.
Her only response was then why doesn’t the tank look like this then.

My husband doesn't care much at all about the corals beyond an occasional "oh yeah that one is cool" but he is an animal lover and enjoys the different fish personalities. For a while the money was an issue but we've resolved that one by creating a "fish budget" - he knows there are certain things I have to buy regularly to keep things stable. I don't buy unnecessary things unless we work it into the budget and can afford it. On the flip side, he's seen how much joy and serenity my tanks give me. He loves me and I love my tanks, so we're all good :)

I have to add that I am very, very lucky.

My girlfriend of 8 years (Yeah yeah...) was originally neutral/skeptical about the 250 gallon tank in our living room, but eventually she has come around to loving it. She now knows (and uses) fish and coral species name, not just "Ooo, nemo!" and "OOOoooOOoOO, anemonemoneee!" She has bought coral pieces at the LFS/expos, and takes an active role in helping me solve algae problems.

For those of you with a SO that hates the tank, here's my suggestion: CLEAN YO **** UP! My tank sits in an open concept living/dining room. To make my girlfriend happy, I keep my fish **** cleaned up (such as):
  • Put your test kits awawy
  • Put your 5g buckets away
  • Put your fish/coral food away
  • Got a sump? Close the doors.
  • Dropped alk/calc solution on the floors? Wipe it up, otherwise you'll have white powder on the floor.
This may not make your SO happy about your tank, but it will at least make them not mad. Baby steps :)
