Spouses happy?

My wife likes it for 3 reasons
1) it sits in our "main" room, so I spend more time in there with her instead of golfing or whatever
2) it gives her ideas on Christmas gifts, birthday, etc. - good for me too!
3) it all started because my special needs son enjoyed watching tanks at the doctor's office, but now he can watch at home

Number 3 !!!! Awesome!!!!

I've had FW tanks since 1960. I made the leap into SW about 10 years ago. After a divorce and remarried, my new Bride (2 years), Is very accepting. She has her dogs and understands pets are expensive. Well, we are doing an addition onto the house and she told the architect to make sure to design in a spot for a "big" tank (120 gal) . I'm feeling very lucky as I will be able to design it with all the things I have dreamed about having with the plumbing etc...

My wife loves the tank BUT she has a very sensitive sense of smell. My tank has been up an running for about 10 months. Recently, every day when I turn off the return pump during a feeding, the tank began to stink...and I mean STINK. I have a terrible sense of smell and I could not stand it! It turns out that when I turn the pumps off, the water level drops about 1 inch (2 inches in my overflow) creating a classic low tide scenario. A little scrubbing and elbow grease on the exposed areas and it's fixed now.

To expand further on my wife, it's all about priorities. As long as it's a hobby and not an all encompassing obsession she's fine with it. We just moved into a new house, so of course a bigger tank. But the house takes priority, which is why that bigger tank is sitting oh so close to completion but am now looking at summer potentially to get it up and running. But, the house takes priority. Of course, right now the house taking priority is the completion of a home theater lol. First world problems for sure.

My wife is also one who understands that there are far worse things a husband could pick as a hobby. Reefkeeping keeps me at home or a fish store. Hard to get into much trouble, other than financial, at either location.

Got rid of my wife and got a kitty. My kitty loves my tanks and never complains, even when I spill water all over the house.

Hahaha

My cat would always drink out of our fresh water tank. I tried to feed him fish too.. but he doesn't like fish. He just was there for the water.. and for whatever reason the cat loves flowing water. Always runs into the bath room to drink from the faucet.

My wife encouraged me to start the first tank... and the sixth. And to break those down and go back to two. She encourages my obsession and appreciates my fastidiousness. She bought me a Genesis water change system for Christmas.

I guess I gave up my single digit golf handicap, my weekend auto racing with the guys and I have probably two drinks a year now. I think she sees what I gave up for the kids (she works a lot) so she's never given me a hard time about anything. Like ever...

Second time's the charm brother!

but things I say go over his head.

Lol. That's how my dad buys things. He ask my mom and she is zoned out on the iPad and says okay. Then whatever he ask for arrives. And when my mom ask he said she said ya. Sneaky sneaky. :p

I bought my tank for my wife. She picks out the coral and fish and I just tell her yes or no as far as compatibility. I never wanted to do a saltwater tank even though I always thought they were awesome. I thought they would be too much work. I have a 125 gallon exotic pleco tank. Turns out this saltwater thing is easier than I thought. It is also more expensive than I thought but that's ok because she loves it. I do all the maintenance as well so I get to pick out the CUC at least.

My fiance is cool with it. I just let her name everything. She's also a geologist so she enjoys learning about the science of everything.
I see what she did there. Mine was chill about everything until fiancé became wife. Now she hates everything I do unless it's sit on the couch with her and watch lifetime movies or watch her stare at her phone. 13 years! Institution of marriage is a beautiful thing if you like to be institutionalized!

I nipped the sit and watch chick flicks in the bud early on lol! She doesn't even ask anymore. I do make a point to watch some stuff with her as compromise is important. It's not like I ever asked her to ever watch me play video games!

yep. I've more then once used the example "I don't go out and buy a fish tank and expect you to maintain it", and also the statement "if you don't like it my fish and I will find a new home." This hobby is time consuming and expensive, I know, but I don't have debt, make good money, and was established before we met. (And had a saltwater tank for that matter too) So I don't spend much time worrying or arguing, weather she likes it or not. Honestly if you don't find beauty in having a well laid out reef tank there is something wrong with you anyway. As long as it's not put in front of true responsibilities and bills. Truly I feel it's jealousy more than anything. Luckily I have big basement windows. You would not believe how much reef gear one can buy for 1000 bucks. LoL

The wife has been there from day one. She doesn't have all the nuts and bolts down on the chemistry but can she respond to the apex alarms and turn things on and off as needed. She bought me a glasscages starfire 65g for xmas. Setting it up as a fish only tank so she can get some of those non reefsafe fish she likes.

So my gf for the last year and a half has had to deal with my hobby and has loved it our first true no kids date was reefapalooza Orlando and going again in may. Trying to figure out a seahorse tank just for her. Finances!! Bills first.

My wife was very apathetic about it at first. Not very interested, then I think a little miffed about the cost. (I went a little over what we budgeted).
During the build she was almost hostile about the whole thing.

No however, she gets out of bed and goes straight to the tank!! Won't let me go to the fish shop without her. And is planning a trip to Denver for ReefStock 2017.

Can't seem to get her to help with maintenance yet tho!! :-)

My wife loves it but complains why I need to keep going bigger. I have transtioned from a 75, 120, 155, 265 and now a 300DD. So now she just limits me to 2 tanks so I do not cover all the free room in the house. You know I could always build a house aronf a custon tank...:)

When I bought the 220 my wife asked what I was going to do with the 60 cube. I said I'd sell it off when everything was moved over and she asked why lol! Love that woman. I think I'll use it for a post TTM long term QT though. Let fish adjust to tank life for a couple of months before heading over to the DT.
