So I have always heard check the tank late at night for polyp extension...I have done so and see no polyp extension. I know this is weird because in the wild they mostly only extend at night. I am going to start treating for red bugs which I diagnosed I had(just waiting for the meds to come in from Canada). Could the Red bugs be limiting this? i do not have any fish that would peck at the corals.

Yes for sure. Sps usually display terminal extension at night. Once you've seen this you know what people are talking about when they say their sps have crazy pe. You can however train them sort of to extend when lights are on. I used acropower combined with reef roids to achieve this.

That is after you've fixed the redbug problem. Which really isn't that bad compared to black bugs or aefw. Goodluck !

I have no polop extension at night at all lights out polops in

I do have it during the day tho and I personally think it's crazy pe

I just read an article about why you should feed during the day because that's when pools are out. I think corals are smart and if all the nutrition they need is fed during the day then they will extend during the day if it is at night they will extend at night

If you don't see little polyp extension at night it's time to start searching for the culprit.

It's likely something is nipping at them.
But what if everything we thought and was told about corals is wrong. I always thought the same thing but my pe during the day is insane and at night I have nothing. The go to bed.

in recent discovery they say that it's better for corals to eat during the day not at night which everyone said u should do since I can rember.

I think each tank is diffent I do not have any fish that nip at corals I feed a ton during the day and nothing at night the corals know that so they have no reason to have pe at night. My corals start waving to me at around 11 when my lights kick on

I'm almost 100% sure I have no pest in my system besides some hydroids and I just found an aptasia which I have taken care of.

So what if we were all made to think that corals are supposed to have the best pe at night but it turned out to be an old wives tale?

Certainly possible. They also need to expel toxins and certain types claim dominance using stingers and such. I suppose if you work night shift you learn to eat dinner in the morning.

Night time PE is mostly crazy for me, especially SPS. For LPS, it depends on what are the "things" that come out after lights is off. I turned on my small pump and air pump in the sump to stir the crap in there. This fine particulate feeds the tank. Whenever I drops amino or reef energy, or broadcast feed filter feeders food, they all gone nuts.

Im a creep with a flashlight. Some of the ones that dont have much PE in the day (WWC Jack Frost) has gnarly long polyps at night. Palletta Pink Tip is the same.
See my paletta has crazy pe during the day u can only see the polops during the day can't see what's under neath

Some corals have crazy PE during the day, almost nothing at night. That is normal. As long as it grows, color is good - no worries.

This guy is a hairy monster during the day, and almost bald when lights off.
