T5 can put out more light than halides. Where halides shines a bright spectrum down onto your reef, T5's "bathe" the corals in light. Good results can be achieved with both types of lighting. If just depends on your personal preference. But when you use T5's on an SPS dominated tank, you must use enough bulbs with high PAR in order to get the growth and color you're looking for.
