Stacking montipora

So, as you can see in my pictures, my monti has grown to the point of shading to many of my corals. I was wondering if I could just frag the portions that are causing the most shading and place them right on top of the main colony. I know it’s going to kill whatever is underneath it but won’t it just keep on growing from the frags? Honestly, I was actually considering placing the frags upside down so that it would die and give me another place to put some coral. Any thoughts or has anyone else done this?

I feel where you’re coming from. Problem is I think I’ve been inundating my poor lfs with montipora frags already. This stupid epidemic has completely frozen all frag swaps in my area. That’s why I was thinking about staking pieces on top of one another. I’m truly out of space for coral. I have an elegance that is over a foot in diameter and a bubble catching up. I’m hopefully upgrading to a bigger tank in the future but not anytime soon. My acros are growing into each other. It all goes back to "be careful what you wish for”. I hate to see the coral warfare that goes on. Imagine my surprise when I found out leptoseris and pavona have sweepers! Long ones too!

They are growing and fusing into each other.
