Hey guys im very advanced in freshwater i have a 120 gallon with 8 discus and im bored of it and its not really a challenge anymore so i decide im going to get into saltwater. I have a empty 29 gallon tank waiting for fish. Well i guess my real quistion is what "essentials" do i need im on a budget but im wiling to get the equipment. Thx guys

lights, some live/dry rock a good substrate, protein skimmer, test kits for ammonia, nitrite, nitrates, refractometer, powerheads for water movement. probally a few more things this is just what i can think about as of know. welcome to r2r and good luck. oh one other thing is patients your tank will need to cycle for about 3 to 4 weeks

Thanks im doing a FOWLR tank so i can just use flouresent right? And do i need a wet dry filter and a sump or can i use two aqueon 20 quitflow filters and maybe a fluval u3. Thx

with a fowlr im sure fluoresance would work. as far as the aqueons they will work but would sugggest adding a hob skimmer in addition to the aqueons

Thanks got any advice forstarting a saltwater tank

Research anything and everything you can especially before adding anything to your tank. Check out wetwebmedia.com for great articles on setting up marine tanks. Remember not to rush anything. If you've been keeping Discus then you know the basics of how to keep fish alive...

and go ahead and upgrade that light because I can promise you will want to drop a coral in there once you're successful with the fish. :D

gobys, clownfish, damsels, chromis, dragonettes, cardinalfish, firefish, some blennys, just make sure there not aggressive some damsels and chromis are very aggresive just research before you buy

Welsomce to r2r! I am rather new to the whole saltwater thing so not sure how much help I can be, but more than willing to share what has happened with my setup of my 29 gallon biocube... Haven't made any HUGE mistakes yet (knock on wood LOL) or I would say you could learn from my mistakes...

Welcome to R2R! My LFS sells those marine lights and he wouldn't sell then to me because it's not enough light for a reef for a tank that size you shouldn't have any problems finding a two-four bulb T5 fixture for a good price. Four bulbs would be a lot on that tank but if you find a good deal on it go for it!

One little piece of advice please do NOT for any reason get a damsel. My experience with them is that they all turn VERY aggressive and are almost impossible to catch.

Research any fish you are looking at buying on a few different sites. Save them in your phone if you have a smartphone. My favorite one is LiveAquaria.com. They tell you the minimum tank size, temperament, reef compatible, who should care for it, etc. I always like to compare this with some other sites just to get a rounded idea about the fish.

Welcome to R2R! Thanks for joining and please make sure and post often!
