Starting Fresh - What Would You Do?

Anyone have thoughts on the Fluval Evo? And honestly I’m impressed by the amount of people helping out so quickly! Greatly appreciated.

Almost anything works (for your base starting point). Esthetics are your first impression. So go with what speaks to you. BUT, plan around it ahead of time.

Will it support other equipment you may add?

How easy is it to upgrade?

What kind of filtration and circulation can you achieve?

Never had one personally but the one lfs here keeps a few up and stocked etc. They look nice (cleaning cut, compact aio build). I believe most people seem to replace the pump, the skimmer is ok but not the best (not sure anything else will fit tho), and the lights are ok for some basic soft coral and some lps but would need to be upgraded if you want to keep anything with a higher light requirement. They keep some soft coral in theirs and even have a baby stone fish it's cool bc the tank looks empty untill he moves. Obviously he'll be moved is he grows.

The other thing to keep in mind is that it's dorm life, you will have to move the tank in a year and likely every year untill you get to live in an apartment or off campus housing and will probably still move a bit after that point. I'd only place things in that tank that will tolerate some swings and grow quick. This isnt a big deal if you plan for it but can be a big hassle if you don't. Id do one or two rock structures mortared together and probably a bare bottom, that way everything is easy to pick up toss in a tote and reassemble a few times a year.
