Before I start, I wanted to clarify the correct dose.

From the link below, it says to dose 4.8ml for 150 gallons. Is that 4.8 in total or 4.8ml per 150 gallons? Other sources say start with 15ml per 100 gallons and increase every week 15ml per 100 gallons. Not sure which source to follow. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I dose vinegar and kalkwasser and this article is the one that makes most sense to me.

kalkwasser

Interesting did you also read the one from Coral Magazine? The forum invited one of the article writers as a guess who broke it down clearly as in the magazine. I do Vodka, Vinegar, Sugar, and Kalk with great success for the past 3years

What are you dealing with? Do you have pics? It's always good to learn more from others.

Its always best to go low at first (trust me) and a Really Great read on this and Vodka and Sugar dosing is on Coral Magazine Sept/Oct 2010 "Coral Feeding
Coral - September/October 2010nd Melve's Reef will explain why slow and low is best

I am going to be dosing in my fowlr tank. I have no corals in there with the exception with a couple of zoas that I am not too worried about.

Dtech - I downloaded that PDF file. I will check it out soon. Thanks.

NP,
Vinegar will lower you Ph this is the reason for Kalk but slow and low with a good journal will prevent major issue regardless of environment :). Please post in a few weeks or so once you get started.

So I should start out with with dosage that is listed in the link that I posted? Start out at 4.8 for 150 gallons and then just follow what the chart says?

I would go 1/2 or 3/4 because each tank responds different and it's easier to correct if low than high. Plus it will give you time to see if any noticeable changes (good or bad). I started low and raised every week and have had no issues and could see at the right point a noticeable change in my fish, coralline, and water quality; also my Ph and P03/N04.

Sounds good! Thanks Dtech. My nitrates are ready around 40-50ppm using salifert if I read it correctly (top down view) and I would like to bring it to 0 if possible. I will start tomorrow.

I also use those test kits but I found a narrower tube that allowed me to view from the side (much easier). Old API test tubes.

I have those tubes as well. Does reading it from the side from that tube give you the same reading as looking top down from the original salifert tube? If I look top down per instructions, its about 40ppm. If I look from the side, its close to 100ppm.

In the Salifert for the N03 I used the API and it gave me a defining color that was accurate but for the P04 I used a 10mL that came with it. So I used the API 5mL only with the N03. The color is the color (Laymen) it won't get darker due to being in a narrow tube, the color will be the same.
I couldn't read mine from the top that's why I used a narrow tube.

Why are you thinking about carbon dosing with a fowlr tank? Fish can handle higher nitrates and phosphates more than corals. I have been using Redsea Nopox with great results. Vodka has also been used with good results.

With a Fowlr your biggest concern is loss of oxygen from a bacterial bloom but as long as you don't go crazy you shouldn't have any worries. I recommend around 3ml per 100 gallons to start and then increase it 5 ML a week until you get desired results. In a fish only system you pretty much take most of the concerns away cause most issues caused by carbon dosing are more coral related. Just keep your tank well oxygenated and you'll be fine.

3mL of what? Sorry Vodka, Vinegar, or Sugar.

Also even in a FOWLR having a very health bacteria culture that's diverse with greatly improve your fish health and allow your tank to handle most foreign bacteria, algae, and not allow some parasites to get a foothold in your tank.
That's why in the Ocean (no more than 20ft there can be death and then total life.

Vinegar(that's what this thread is about, right?)
I agree that carbon dosing can be very useful in a fowlr

Man, its going to take you quite a long time to bring down your Nitrate numbers going by the instructions. When they say the Vinegar will bring down your PH, it can, but you'll be dosing quiet a bit to get it to come down, I don't think your going to run into that problem.
IMO, Vodka Dosing is better, your not going to be using cups to bring down the Nitrates in the end, but MLS.
I can give you instructions on how to Dose Vodka and bring down the Nitrates much faster, just give a shout.

YOu sure thats not 1.5mL per week?
And if you go to fast and generate a Algae bloom (especially in a FWLOR tank) youll rob the tank of oxygen and this can wreck havik on your tank. This is why low and slow is the smartest method.
