starting to vinegar dose

1.5mls of vinegar is nothing. 1.5mls of Vodka is nothing also. The O2 thing is one reason why the recommendations are to have a good skimmer and it be kept clean, so ite working at top levels.

That's a good question and recommendation also.
So what type of Skimmer are you running ICE? And other filtration devices and processes?

That's chart is in his original link, thats what he was asking originally, weather to up the dose to 15mls as suggested in that Link or use the less from another link.

That chart is pretty much what I've always used though I round up to make things easier on occasion. Do I think 15ml is OK too? Absolutely, but I've never been in a big enough hurry, you'll get there both ways.

This may help you.

Thanks for posting up the chart from the link.

I have a total 160g volume with a medium bioload but I feed heavy so the nitrates go up. For filtration, I just have a SRO-3000 internal. I am running UV and Carbon as well. I think that skimmer is overkill on my tank size but its been doing a great job. I am also dosing Vit C for carbon too but I wanted to add a diverse group of bacteria so decided to add vinegar as well.

I haven't started dosing yet and my plan was to start today but I will be starting tomorrow. I did vinegar dose before but it was awhile ago and it was in a reef tank. Now that it's a fowlr, I thought maybe upping up the initial dose wouldn't be bad with no corals.

So you think I should start off with 15ml per 100 gallons and increase it by 15ml every week?

Why are you thinking about carbon dosing with a fowlr tank? Fish can handle higher nitrates and phosphates more than corals. I have been using Redsea Nopox with great results. Vodka has also been used with good results.

I know they can handle high nitrates. My last fowlr had nitrates around 200ppm but I this time, I would like to nip it in the butt before it gets that high and start carbon dosing. I did try vodka before but I heard the window for error is much less with vodka dosing compared to vinegar.

Error? HUH, pfft. You don't have to worry about that, unless you plan on dumping the jug into the tank. In order to mess up your tank, you really really need to dump alot in there to get it to go haywire. But in a sense what you've heard is correct, it takes a hellof alot more vinegar to get the Nitrates to come down, than it does using mls of Vodka.
And yes, up the doseage by 15mls a week using vinegar. Using Vodak, you'd up the doseage by 5mls a week.
Lets put it to you this way, I tested out the vinegar once, I was up to 80mls a day, and it still wasn't coming down. I thought, thats nuts, I was now measuring it in cups, instead of a syringe. I don't care for dosing more than that to drop Trates, especially being that high, its going to start affecting PH.
Using Vodka, I got it to come down using only 40mls.

So how would you go about dosing vodka? How much should I start with and increase by every week?

It would be nice to have someone write an article about dosing vinegar specifically for R2R! :D

To start out with, you use 2.5mls. Go up to 5mls the following week, and add 5mls each week it doesn't start to come down. You only need to test once a week. Once you see your Nitrates start to come down, thats your daily maintenance mls. Once you hit 10mls, its best to split up the dosing, do half in the am and half in the pm. Once your Nitrates are where you want to keep them, you cut the dose in half, that is now your daily routine doseage. If you miss a daily dose, do not put double in the next day, missing a day will not hurt anything.

I agree, I even stop for a week at a time for vacations and have no issues.

I started dosing this past monday. I started with 25ml vinegar on a total ~160g system. I am also dosing Vit C too. I already noticed the skimmer picking up more and I am having to clean it sooner. So far, I have cleaned it twice in the past 4 days and I think today or tomorrow again. I will be upping the dose by 20ml next monday.

Very nice:). Can you see your clearing up more and more polyp extension?
