State may limit coral harvests

State may limit coral harvests

It seems like this type of story comes out every couple of months. I'll have to buy some rics while I still can.

Yeah i tend to see these stories alot too since i am down here....the regulations are pretty strict as it is. Guess i will keep an eye out for an new changes upcoming.

Keep us posted. It will be interesting to see how this impacts the hobby.

I cant see it impacting the hobby very much because the limitations are usually meant for recreational collectors and are usually hit first with restrictions...those with licenses are able to collect more.

isnt this a good thing? only a matter of time before they clean it out.If I lived in florida id be bummed on dudes just ripping countless corals off the reef like this post.how do they regulate it? 50 Live Coral Florida Ricordea Yuma | eBay

Unfortunately it goes on like this all over the oceans - Thats why aquaculturing is so important. Imagine the Pacific and Indonesia where they good stuff is!

I guess you'd have to look at the regulations in those particular countries and also factor in some illegal collection as well.

wow thats a lot of ricordea. What are the restrictions on collectors that have a permit anyway?

Recreational collectors just need a saltwater fishing license but they have to follow guidelines to a T because i have heard of people getting arrested and big fines. Commecial has a couple licenses to acquire. here is the info Marine Life and Tropical Ornamentals

This is a good thing and a bad thing for the hobby. It is nice knowing that there are efforts being made to conserve reef ecosystems. Always a huge plus. This would make the hobby learn towards aquacultured and maricultured corals more. however, prices will go up on certain things. All in all, I am for it. I am not for this though: http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/pr/pdfs/species/coral_petition_cbd.pdf

Most of the corals listed haven't had enough research done on them to actually decide how the population is progressing.

Dude that petition was submitted back in 2009 - any idea where is stands or if it any changes are coming from it?

I'm surprised these states do not encourage propagation. With all the collectors, hobbyists, and aquaculture farms we should be able to replenish the diminished colonies they are talking about. Ther should be government subsidies that encourage propagation.
Our government needs to learn to be proactive rather than reactive.

I couldnt agree more with you and unfortunately it probably wont happen...not enough money in it for them. Sad but true. Which is why i appreciate organizations like ORA and others that aquaculture!

By the time 2012 comes Florida will be under water and all the captive corals will be released into the environment creating a new place to harvest...lol j/k

If we theorize the fact we plant trees to replenish rainforests, the same should be said about replenishing coral colonies. Stop the greed and feed the need!!!!!! My take on it anyhow..

Im all for bringing new species and color morphs into the hobby, but the pillaging the reefs doesnt make any sense. It's an unsustainable business model for these collectors.

FL fish and wildlife is a joke anyway.
the said truth has already been posted. their rules only really apply to ppl going and getting their own, not the com. fishers.
perhaps they should go back and revist that oil spil they said wasnt affecting the gulf

Youre right. Overfishing is a problem here as well as internationally. Just another "elephant in the room" that no one wants to address because it might effect certain economies. For anyone who hasn't seen it, I recommend a doc called "End of the Line". It was just recwntly added to Netflix on demand.
