Ok, I've helped out friends and lfs with air line leaking water issues over the years and while setting up my new pico this question came to mind. I set up equipment with small (1/8" 1/4" ) fittings for work pretty regularly so I have a slightly different view on how these connections are made. When making connections with soft tube specifically I use stiffeners for j/g type fittings and ties on the outside for tension or smooth Barb type fittings. For some reason this isn't common for most aquarists and I'm curious if there's a reason. Since I'm not feeling very articulate I attached photos of the parts I'm referring to and how I'd make the connections.

Probably lack of awareness mostly...I've never used these but can see how they'd be helpful in situations where the tubing could have strain put on it. Does the stiffener help prevent leaks with the guest fittings?

Yes stiffeners are used when the line is soft and there is difficulty getting a good seal. The line shown is the silicone type commonly sold as aquarium air line. They create a little outward pressure from inside the line so you arnt relying on water or air pressure to keep the line from leaking.
