Ok, I've helped out friends and lfs with air line leaking water issues over the years and while setting up my new pico this question came to mind. I set up equipment with small (1/8" 1/4" ) fittings for work pretty regularly so I have a slightly different view on how these connections are made. When making connections with soft tube specifically I use stiffeners for j/g type fittings and ties on the outside for tension or smooth Barb type fittings. For some reason this isn't common for most aquarists and I'm curious if there's a reason. Since I'm not feeling very articulate I attached photos of the parts I'm referring to and how I'd make the connections.
