Stopping gurgling noise in overflow box

What is the trick to stopping that obnoxious gurgling noise in my overflow box?? There has to be some trick to it.. It seems to come and go but I can't figure out exactly why... Any advise appreciated..

Good question
I put in a gate valve on my line from the overflow down to the sump to control the siphon, and I can tweak the flow. I am interested to see what other have done also

Without some sort of open drain this can be a cause of a disaster. That said, if done correctly this can be dead silent.

@Blizz, What kind of overflow do you have ? doe sit just have a single drain? if so, Look up Hofer gurgle buster or the Durso standpipe. Both of these would more than likely be your best solution if you only have one drain or a Hang on the back overflow. If you have more than one drain in a single overflow, look into the Herbie design.

Thanks for the replies.. It seems that most are related to the Durso standpipe but in my situation, I have a hang on the back system so I fail to see where I could incorporate that with my overflow box...

Any other ideas?? I hope so.

Typically with a HOB or durso, the gurgle comes from the overflow starting and stopping siphon. These designs are not actually intended to siphon. Likely your return pump is returning too much flow, which overwhelms the overflow drain, which forces it to start siphoning. Once siphon starts, it sucks water down much faster, which clears too much water and breaks the siphon. When the siphon breaks, you get that glug/glug or toilet flush sound.

To stop this, put an adjustable valve on your return pump and dial it down until the siphoning stops.

Thanks for the tip Brian,, I am a little confused though, I would think that not enough flow into the drain would be causing this on and off surge due to sucking air but you are suggesting too much water?? Am I understanding you right??

If you can't fit a conventional durso, try a Maggie Muffler. I think I saw a DIY recently on making one.....pretty simple.


Oops! I actually was thinking Hofer Gurgle Buster. I couldn't find the DIY, but HERE is a video that shows how to make one.

Here a pic of my overflow... small 1/4 " tube attached to the 1" drain tube is for sucking the accumulated air out. Hope this helps

Yes. In normal operation the water should be spilling over into your pipe. If too much flows to the overflow box, it covers the entire mouth of the drain. Once the mouth is fully covered, a siphon starts. Siphons pull water much faster than a spillover drain, so it quickly sucks water, faster than your return supplies it. This then leads to the siphon breaking and your overflow returns to spillover operation. Until the water crests the top of your overflow inlet again and the cycle starts over.

I have a very course sponge in my drain tube. It catches really bug stuff but not much else, so, it doesn't impede water flow. As a bonus, it acts like a muffler on a car or a baffle in the pipe of a motorcycle; it really quiets things down.

The sponge in your overflow box is nice but opened on top, so you will still hear noise. You could use a closed version of the sponge you have in the overflow. But as a test, try putting a piece of white filter floss in the opening on top. If it is quieted to your liking, then purchase a closed sponge. I don't recommend filter floss as a permanent solution as it clogs quickly and can cause a flood.

looks like the drain pipe needs an air vent. you can put a Maggie muffler if it will fit or put a "T" coupling

from the photos, your best bet to silence is a maggie mufler or a Hofer gurgle buser. I had hofers with great success.

The over flow I have is a CPR over flow http://www.cpraquaticinc.com/cs-overflows in the picture you will notice a tube coming out of the strainer the slips into the overflow. The tube has a O ring to keep it in place. Same concept as the DYI but done different. CPR also recommends using a pump to keep the siphon and it works well. I still had to use the gate value to adjust the flow.

I have the eshopps overflow and I noticed one day while cleaning the filter the box actually ran quieter than with a filter so I toyed with it for a minute well needless to say I stuck the little drain line a little further up the filter so it's not sitting all the way down in the hole. Anyways after doing that and putting a small piece of packing foam over the back box it is a lot quieter. I tried the air line to extend it up a little and to be honest it seemed to just make it worse so I just left it I don't notice the overflow as much as I use to anymore, also when the filter starts getting clogged the noise picks up a little on Mine from more water flowing threw at once
the foam silenced the noise coming from the back a lot by itself, also make sure the little breather hole is on the opposite side the flows coming from

@bbearden101 in your video. The water level in your oberflow prefilter box is just as high as the water level in your tank. So one can say that your just siphoning direct from in your tank yes?

How long has your tank been running like this?
