Stopping gurgling noise in overflow box

Lol yeah there's about a half a inch maybe a little closer to a quarter inch drop depending on how the u pipe going over the back of the tank is. it will raise my water level in my tank and my sump will struggle this box has been on my tank since I converted it from freshwater to saltwater at the beginning of the year

that's where my water level sits in the back. And yes the u pipe I crooked for some reason if I run it straight it makes my system purge so it sits like this

For what it's worth, I tried several different things on my Eshopps overflow before I came across the Hofer Gurgle Buster (as mentioned by several others previously). It took a little tweaking to get it to take the full amount of my pump return volume, but it now works great and is almost silent. Good luck!

The over flow I have is a CPR over flow http://www.cpraquaticinc.com/cs-overflows in the picture you will notice a tube coming out of the strainer the slips into the overflow. The tube has a O ring to keep it in place. Same concept as the DYI but done different. CPR also recommends using a pump to keep the siphon and it works well. I still had to use the gate value to adjust the flow.

I just started my sump setup last night and I have the CPR CS 90 overflow and it is making the gurgling sound. I'd love to find out how to stop that sound or at least lessen it.

So it looks like building a stockman standpipe is the way to go. I already have most of the parts so should just need a couple more pieces.

One cheap and easy fix that worked for me was to stick some airline tubing into the overflow tube. I just kept pushing it down into the overflow tube until the gurgling was gone. This allowed the trapped air to escape easily. The downside is that the rushing sound of water can be heard from the tubing, but if you use a long enough piece you can just reroute it to under the stand and no sound issues then. G'luck.

sorry to bring this thread back up. You used a gate valve on the drain pipe into the sump? I never heard of that

just set my cpr overflow up today and it is very loud and does seem like drain is running faster. Alot of Visible airbubbles going into sump As well
Not sure what to do about this noise. Would a ball valv on return help?

Here’s what I did with my overflow to make it quieter

The little holes drilled into the top of the U are extremely important. Otherwise, when the power goes out and then resumes, air will not be able to escape the U and the drains won’t be able to function.

I'm not an expert but I did look at the cpr video. Seems to me like the noise and bubbles could be caused by the drain not being covered with water. I would try putting some filter floss between the sponge and air tube and see if that quiets it down. You could just do that when you clean the sponge. If that does work a more permanent solution could be a pvc cap over the sponge. You would have to drill a hole for the air tube and another hole to vent the cap.

Or perhaps you just need to adjust the rigid air tube to see if the problems are solved. But that would be too easy.

But I'm not a expert.

So that's worth .02 at most.

Ps I don't like or recommend valves of any kind. I would rather put up with the noise then add something else that needs adjustment and can fail as conditions change and new adjustments are required.

I think i may try this stockman standpipe which does include a cap with a hole as you mentioned.

Typically with a HOB or durso, the gurgle comes from the overflow starting and stopping siphon. These designs are not actually intended to siphon. Likely your return pump is returning too much flow, which overwhelms the overflow drain, which forces it to start siphoning. Once siphon starts, it sucks water down much faster, which clears too much water and breaks the siphon. When the siphon breaks, you get that glug/glug or toilet flush sound.

To stop this, put an adjustable valve on your return pump and dial it down until the siphoning stops.

I recently replaced HOB filters and skimmer with a sump setup that has a HOB overflow. I had done a lot of research to pull this off and was disappointed with all of the gurgling and splashing noises that started and stopped at random. I already had a gate valve installed with a variable speed return pump. After reading this reply, it took me literally 5 minutes to adjust the gate valve and return pump flow rate to match. Now it is dead silent! Thanks for the advice!

I wasn't even aware that these were actually a salable item. Back in the day we would simply DIY the Maggie Muffler. If you Google search Maggie Muffler, you'll get a bunch of links.
