Storing RODI Water - How I did it

My 23 Fallon Rubbermaid ATO container and my RO/DI are both in my garage in Phoenix. The tank and ATO peristaltic pump and controller are in the house 35 feet away. I drilled through the wall at baseboard level then ran tubing under the kitchen base cabinets and up and over a 6' sliding glass door behind the trim. Been installed for 9 years with zero issues. The 23 gallon Rubbermaid has been drained and cleaned exactly twice in those 9 years. I lifted the lid and noticed a couple silverfish bugs dead on the side above the waterline last week but the TDS is still 0 with a COM-100 handheld meter so I'm not concerned.

I need to look into one of these pumps. I'd love to buy some white murlok and run a line from my storage container into my ATO container to fill it up. Would be even better to automate it somehow. First things first!

First time using the water container. Have to say I wish I had done this before I even setup my first tank a year ago. I do have this container up high enough to fit a 5 gallon bucket, but I like to use this container to refill my ATO since it had a spout and a handle. I have a 3/4" barb, I'll pick up some hose this weekend to make this easier. Probably pickup another threaded fitting and ball valve while I'm at it. I can make it 2-2.5" shorter had I measured right the first time.

I've heard that brutes leach and have been lookn for a barrel. Being told use pickle or olive ones so is brute ok?? I'm setting up a 75g and need an RO storage

I lurk mostly, but I have been watching this thread because I have an RODI tank in my basement. It is a 250 gallon tank measuring 7' tall x 3' in diameter and stays at a constant temp in the low 70's. I use it for water changes and emergency water needs. I have floats with RODI lines not only going to this tank, but I have lines going to my DT for top off, a Brute salt mixing barrel and a line going to a new tank. I have had this RODI water tank for several years and have never needed to clean it. I do 40 gallon water changes monthly on a 75 gallon DT then fill the Brute from the 250 gal container then the RODI system fills the tank back up.

I have a question...how do you know that the calcium, alkalinity and mag drops if the salt water sets over an extended period of time? Have you measured it? If the barrel is covered where does it go? After I do a water change I mix up a new batch of salt water to always have it available in case of a critical need. I keep it heated to 79 degrees and use an air pump and circulation pump constantly. I have done this for 15 years and have never had a parameter problem with my DT. I have never tested my salt mixture after it has sat for several so I can't say for sure the calcium, etc has dropped or not. I am curious???

The Ace Roto Mold container has been in service a few weeks now. I should have bought a container a long time ago, this has made my reefing life much easier! I also finally got my @MarineDepot booster pump hooked up!

I've had the booster pump hooked up for a few weeks now. Honestly this is something I should have done a long time ago. It is now taking me about 5 hours to make 30+ gallons of water. Before I had the booster pump setup it would take MUCH longer to make water. I also added 4" concrete block to my container stand and now I can get my ATO bucket under the ball valve easily. I still need to address my RODI filters and move my unit so that I can easily access the canisters and manual flush valve.

I have a tiny 1 car garage, and my woodworking "shop" is in there, as well as the washer/dryer. So permanent mounting of a tank or trashcan is out of the question. I got the roller base for my 32 gallon Rubbermaid can so I can move it around as needed.

Though now that I'm down to just my 17 gallon reef, I don't need the big can. I'm trying to decide if my 60g planted tank will need stored RO/DI...

Here's what I use: 2 85 gal storage tanks. One for RODI and one for mixing. Each has a small pump below it. The filter is in the guest bath on the other side of the wall and runs into the first tank through a float. Pump from the first into the mixing tank, add salt mix and keep the pump running (water out of the bottom and back into the top). Both go up to the manifold that has about 20 feet of hose on it. If I want to refill the 20 gal top off I just pump from the RODI. If I want to change and refill my FW tank I do that... I can change 60 gal from my big tank in 15-20 minutes from beginning to drain to tank being refilled. And of course, my dog doesn't mind the set up. Drain into 55 gal rubbermaids.

What a good idea. I will get a 40 Gl tank to improve my footprint in the garage. This will make my wife happy since the garage will be looking more organized...

this is my budget approach. It is piped around the house and right into the sump. Can on the left is RO/DI, Top off comes out of the can on the right using gravity. Can ont he bottom is saltwater. In the pics you can see the can I filled with drainage rock, perforated and buried for waste water from r/o and water changes. it all works well....

I was very limited on space. I wish that my to and Di were not blocking the auto top off can.

Maybe that is something i can change later.

I picked up the Ace Roto 40 gallon vertical container off Rural Kings website ( http://www.ruralking.com/ace-roto-mold-40-gallon-vertical-dome-top-tank-vt0040-18.html ). It took just under 4 weeks to receive and the best part is this shipping was about $10 dollars. This will be used to store RODI water only. I don't have any plans to store salt water.

I used a marker to go over the gallon indicators on the container so that they are more visible

Container comes with the bulk head. I used 3/4 threaded fitting into 3/4 pvc glued into the ball valve. The PVC and 90 past the ball valve are not glued on to eliminate someone walking into it and snapping it off.

@mattsreefadise I just looked on Rural Kings website and it looks like they did change the shipping on the 75 gallon. The 55 gallon has always been expensive to ship for some reason. I added the 65 gallon into my cart and they offer free shipping and the 40 gallon is $10.25 to ship because it doesn't pass the $100 minimum.
