Stuff you like about other forums that could be implemented here to make it better

I thought this might be a good time to start a thread about some of the things that will be missed about RC and could possibly be implemented here to make this forum that much better.

I used the calculators and stickies a lot in the beginning. Even now when building top-off containers and other stuff.
It would be really nice if those things could be implemented here.

i would love a chat area, kinda like instant messaging. I think we ALL can get great use. for instance, something crazy is going on with a prized coral and you dont know. Easier to ask a question and get a response than make a thread and keep refreshing the page to see if anyone has something to say.

Thats all i can think so far, ooo and the Reef2Reef casino.... everyone should have unlimited cash... lol im BROKE AS A JOKE!

I'd like to see a monthly/bi-monthly feature of some sort. An article, an interesting thread, a photo slideshow, a product review, a highlight of one of the sponsor's facilities... could be ANYTHING. I kinda like my product review idea though.

Granted, it's asking a lot to get contributors and to make deadlines even for small features. A lot of thankless work goes into coordinating that kind of thing, but it's pretty much the only reason why I visit RC these days.

I like a "my" page. Where all your buddies are there and shows who's on and who isn't. Links to forums you frequent and have saved. Shows which threads your subscribed too if there is anything new posted.

Monthly photo contest with subject for the month. Winning pic gets a spot on a calender that can be available for purchase the following year. Good way to instill a sense of pride and possibly additional revenue. (new here not sure if you do this allready)

Not available on RC, but zeovit.com has one of the better scientific name SPS identity databases I've seen. I think they just put all the names on their site and let people start populating the species categories. I use it often and it's pretty accurate. I know, it's a big deviation from the "roots" of this site, but it's my real passion.

I've found a couple of the more well known manufacturer's forums useful on RC.

I use the Neptune Systems and the Tunze forums quite a bit. Maybe try to reel them in as sponsors and open forums for them. Just a thought.

The most important thing I like about RC is the large amount of experts that frequent the forum to answer questions and incite important dialogue that people can truly learn from. This site just doesn't have that so I take all my hard questions back to RC.


Get a Randy Farley, Boomer, Eric Borneman, Melev, Billybeau, beananimal, greenbean, tatuvaaj, highlandreefer, Gentics, and a dozen others with the same level of knowledge and expertise and you might come close to the imformative capabilites that RC has. I'm on forums to learn - not play cards.


Sorry. Just being honest. Please don't take it as an insult. Just a comment that there just isn't the vast experience here for advanced questions. I often see rookie questions being answered incorrectly and guiding people in the wrong direction. I know you can't control who answers what questions, but it sure would be helpful to have more people here with some expertise. The glitz and glammor means nothing if the reefing discussion is driven by people with good intentions but limited experience and no expertise.

On a side note Jeremy, we have enough knowledgeable reefers here to be able to answer just about EVERY question there is. You don't have to have a well known name to know the answer to a question.

Also we don't pay known named people to hang on the forums and answer questions. We don't make $500 a month on each sponsor.

You get all them people in the same room and ask them a technical queston and you'll get 4 or 5 different answers. No different here you'll get different answers.
Thats' reefing in general. No matter how good you think they are they don't have all the answers either..

Amen and you can find members blowing off valuable information from professionals on all forums as well.

FWIW IMO I think this is the best forum I have ever had the pleasure of being a member. Anything else that is added here will just be icing on the cake.
