On a side note Jeremy, we have enough knowledgeable reefers here to be able to answer just about EVERY question there is. You don't have to have a well known name to know the answer to a question.

Also we don't pay known named people to hang on the forums and answer questions. We don't make $500 a month on each sponsor. :D

Thank you though.

Yes there are people here that answer questions, but IMO the level of expertise, detail in the answer, and depth that the issues are discussed in is far better on RC.

You get all them people in the same room and ask them a technical queston and you'll get 4 or 5 different answers. No different here you'll get different answers.
Thats' reefing in general. No matter how good you think they are they don't have all the answers either..

JR,

You may get different answers and different perspectives, but it's the dialogue and learning that occurs from the different advanced perspectives and discussions that ensue.

There are many people that like to help and know what their talking about and then there are many more people that like to help but may not be giving the best advice. From what I see there are far fewer that fall within that first category on this forum. I frequent the threads often hear and have yet to see any truly advanced topic discussion with intersting dialogue and the opportunity for many to learn from. I've even started many threads trying to pull this out of people in an attmept to find the experts here and I'm just not seeing what I'm looking for. Again, just my opinion and I am relatively new to this forum so I'll continue to search and try and incite good discussions about advanced topics.

For what it's worth I think the forum is OK. I know that most of the members from a reef club near me have migrated from RC, but the underlying reason for why they moved is the difference in the trading/selling limitations and less strict guidance from mods (of which is good and bad depending on how you view it). The people can now trade and sell stuff much more freely, but this also invites others with malicious intent within the trading/selling scheme.

Please don't take my comments as an attack. I'm only trying to provide some constructive critcism.

Jeremy

EDIT/ADDITION****
I do think there is some relevance to having someone well known answering questions. I at least then know the level of expertise that the advice is coming from. If someone I don't know answers a question I have to consider that this person may be way off course and I then need to ask for studies or proof of validity to confirm accuracy. If it's someone I know is well versed in a topic then there is little need to question them and they also routinely offer up sites of reference to ensure valididty of their responses.

Point taken Jeremy and I as well would like to see more in depth discussion! That be said R2R is only about 3 yrs old versus RC being 10 yrs old. We are young and growing! :D

I would love to have you stick around and help us in this area.

Thanks.

Thanks Rev. I'm around and if I'm not posting I'm at least lurking and reading!!

Building a site like this and getting a vast amount of users takes time. It'll only imporove from here on out, I'm sure!

I've found a couple of the more well known manufacturer's forums useful on RC.

I use the Neptune Systems and the Tunze forums quite a bit. Maybe try to reel them in as sponsors and open forums for them. Just a thought.

Tunze is a sponsor but they did not want a forum. I guess RC is enough for them! LOL!

Neptune has never showed interest in sponsoring.

I am going to keep a running list of things we are going to look at for improving R2R. This does not mean we will do all these things but we will look at adding or implementing what we feel is best for R2R.

1. Reefing Calculators
2. Informative Stickies
3. Chat Area
4. Monthly Feature (article, an interesting thread, a photo slideshow, a product review, etc.)
5. TOTM
6. Little Red House (www button)
7. Monthly Photo Contest
8. Scientific name SPS identity databases
9. More In-Depth Topic Discussion

Ok any more ideas?

I think all these are great ideas, especially 4,5,6 & 7....

Otherwise, I really like the layout of the site.. I've been around here for a couple years now... but just started posting this year...

There are tons of Forums out there, and I pretty much belong to them all,,, there are a couple that really stand out (of course RC) but R2R is one of them that really stands out....

Spectacular list!

How about an archives of very informative threads and articles???

This info in this list of articles is sheer gold and something of this sort would be very good for R2R.
Reef Chemistry Articles - Reef Central Online Community Archives

I've read all these articles at least twice and still continue to pull valuable info from the many pages as I continue to re-read them. I have many more articles to add to the list if you do establish an archives.

I am working now to get permission to use some of the articles in the reef chem forums at RC from the actual authors. I hope to get some permission soon!

+1 I have them offline bookmarked. They are well worth the read.

On the question of lack of indepth posts, I think there has to be questions asked that require such expertise to answer. Currently I haven't seen any that needed any indepth discussion or answer to. I think the more people get involved, questions asked, ect. - the more experienced reefers will get involved to share their answers.
