Sucky "ID request" pictures

Sometimes, that's the best a person can get - picturewise. You're trying to get an angle to show what you are asking about, and the water and glass distort that. Plus, the quality of the camera on a cell phone is sometimes rather lacking. So to say someone's picture isn't good; well maybe that's the best they could get.
Also, yes, I agree that this thread was started in an awfully rude way.

Let me help you out here.

To answer the question in this thread. If you're looking for a nice way to address a less than adequate picture for an ID, just ask the OP if they can get a better picture. Maybe something like, "Could you maybe get a clearer pic?" And maybe even give an explanation like "I'm having a hard time with giving an ID with this photo."

Now, to address the issue of getting a time out for being rude... Our site terms of service are very clear about the vision and goals of R2R are. If you haven't read them recently, check them out here: https://www.reef2reef.com/help/terms/. You'll even find a specific area in there dedicated to "Be courteous" and the clarification that we take our "Be nice" rule very seriously. Our goal here is to be the friendliest, most helpful community that we can be. That being said, we've never taken any kind of administrative action on someone's account for a single violation of this rule. In fact, to get a "time out" you have to have been warned at least once, and that typically follows at least one (usually more than one) message from the staff explaining the rule (after all, we're trying to do our best to be nice too!). So, no one has ever been banned for simply making the rude statement "your picture sucks" (although that is definitely a violation of our be nice rule). However, when your posting habits regularly violate the rules and after multiple messages from moderators asking a member to be respectful and civil with other members, we do occasionally take administrative action (though we hate to do that and avoid it whenever possible...). If a member is willing to work with us, we do everything we can to work with them. HTH

"Your thread sucks" you're right that is much more efficient in delivering the information you desire to share, point taken.

However now all you know is that your thread sucks. you don't why it sucks, you don't know how to make it not suck and you're discouraged from making another thread because what if your next one sucks like the last one? Imagine going up to your grade school teacher with the wrong answer and they just tell you to not be such an idiot next time, I don't think many people would raise their hand again.

I think your missing the point of the R2R spirit... Taking a few extra moments to go into detail with constructive criticism that will help the OP progress in the hobby wether it be taking photos or debating salt mixes, fish stocking etc. If you're unable to comprehend this or you're one of those people that confuse Politcal correctness with basic manners and decency then perhaps this isn't the right forum for you. If you think patience is a virtue then I don't understand why you struggle to take a few extra moments to say "We're going to need some clearer photos, here is how to go about taking them".

You could hav responded to 10 threads constructively with the same amount effort that you're currently putting into complaining about it. That really answers your question for you, just help them because the easiest way to resolve people taking bad pictures is to help them take good ones.

It's not about taking good photo's , it's about posting bad one's and the thinking magically they are going to get a proper ID.

So informing someone that their ID picture sucks is rude? To me it's straight forward, courteous, and helpful. From now on I will just link them to this thread.

We'll that was rude!:p

What's the best way to tell someone that their "Please ID" picture sucks? I mean, isn't it common sense to take a good picture if you want something ID? All blues on or blurry pictures should never be posted for ID's.

Is this world so sensitive now that you can't use the word "suck"? Do not post "your picture sucks" or you'll be put in timeout.

And I wrote suck 4 times in this post so I will probably get a lifetime ban. HaHa
i guess if you want to be a jerk you can. Why not just say the pic needs to be better for a good ID jerk? Or don't answer at all if you can't tell jerk...did i say jerk enough? Gimme a break

You've got to be kidding me? Are you really going to tell me that the best way to be "straight forward" is to just tell them they suck? I honestly don't think you were looking for advice here and just wanted to rant that you got told not to be rude. As others have mentioned it's really easy and straight forward to say "hey, any chance you can get a better picture? It's hard to ID it with the one you posted" , point made.

Yes. It is rude. Straightforward will be telling them that you'll need a clearer photo to make an ID. There's no definition of courteous that includes belittling someone's photo. Helpful would include constructive instruction on how to get a better photo or at least expressing a willingness to help if a better photo is given. Linking them to this thread will also be considered rude (since it essentially infers that their photo falls under the theme of this thread).

I got into saltwater 6 months ago. At that time, if I were a struggling newbie, which I partly was, and I posted an I.D. for something on here I would be just looking for reassurance or help. If I posted a bad pic just let me know and say “hey it would be helpful if you could get a whiter pic to identify the problem”. If you said your pics suck I would be upset with you and think this forum is toxic, which is totally not true. So what if a picture isn’t the best you don’t have to totally bring someone down saying it’s sucks to ask them for a new picture. Just say it nicely!

Troll gonna troll. They are obviously looking for arguments or reinforcement.

I didn't tell anyone they suck.
Effort in = Effort out.

By understanding they are probably new to the hobby and don't know any better. If you are so irritated by the picture and don't want to be bothered with helping, why bother posting to their question? Not trying to be a jerk, but the way you formatted this makes you seem too high and mighty to help.
If he’s too high and mighty to help why would he ask for a better picture to help identify it lolollll
