Where the water drains from the tank into my sump is a compartment that overflows into a level where the water drains into 4 separate filter socks. They clog up too fast for my liking and most importantly they are a pain in the butt to keep clean for lazy people like me. :p

So I am going to remove the socks and add a big square piece of filter floss/pad to that area and just throw it away so often.

Can you recommend some filter floss that I can cut to fit the section and that is cheap enough to just replace each cleaning?

Thank you!

I would also make sure however you are holding the floss or pad in place, that it has somewhere to overflow if it gets clogged. You don't want your return line to get clogged and your return pump overflow your display. :)

Yes exactly! There is an emergency overflow section of the sump. Already been used because of clogging socks! :)

Thanks for the suggestions!

I never found them too difficult to clean, I would just throw them in a bucket with water and the. Throw them all in the washer with some (non gel type) bleach only and then put them into a bucket with a bunch of sea chem prime. When I use the pads I get too lazy and let them get horribly disgusting. Actually now that I think of it washing the socks is a Pain, but I make it that way so my lazy butt will actually do it lololol

check your local HVAC warehouse for the blue pads. They sell the exact same thing by the roll at a fraction of the cost of buying in small qty. Then cut to fit and wash or throw away (its that cheap in bulk)

then if you want to filter at the "sock level, lower microns", MD and BRS sell sock material in rolls. Cut to fit as well.

That's what I did every 3 days. I would then throw the used ones in a bucket of any water, and when the bucket got full I would wash with bleach and an extra rinse......like maybe once every 2 months.

If you buy batting or anything rinse well in tap water. They sometimes contain fire inhibitors which will make the skimmer overflow.

First time I saw something like this. So I could remove my filter socks and use this instead? It doesn't clog as quickly? Does that mean it's not filtering as much?

Also, do copepods go through it ok?

I don't use a sump so I wouldn't know. But the back of my fluval all in one I run it and it works great. You could get a super cheap hob and run just a poly to catch the extra debris... Anyonr have some sump advise for this gentleman...????

I always used Fairfield Quilt Batting in my freshwater planted tank filters with no issues. I will use it in my new reef set up as needed as well.
