Sump Drain quite loud

If you just wanted to see what it would be like without the hole, don't attempt to plug it, just pull those fittings off the top and leave the stand pipe. Once the water is over the pipe its the same difference, you will have to slowly close the drain to get it rise above the pipe and swap over to silence.

IF you plug the hole its gonna siphon until it drops below the elbow make a racket like flushing a toilet then repeat.

Would it make a difference if I shorten the drain pipe so it is only 1.5 inches below the water line instead of the 4 inches it is now?

Sorry I'm not sure with out knowing/seeing more. I assume the valve is on a drain ? By all means adjust & see what happens. I would "think" the syphon drain should be as deep as possible .

big roost has a point. maybe plug the hole some tape maybe & adjust the valve? see how it reacts.

large valve on large pipe. maybe I can close it a bit?

Take that durso nonsense off and run it full siphon. Close the valve until the water level rises to the emergency drain and just a few drops are spilling over into emergency pipe. As for height of main drain, you might be ok with only 1.5” shorter than the emergency (I have a small tank with only about an inch), or you may have to make the main drain shorter than that. If that durso elbo is not glued then just take it off.

yes, I can easily do that. Nothing in the overflow box is glued. If I remove the elbow that pipe will be fully submerged. Are you telling me a full siphon will have zero noise?

I just feel like I want to try tuning the Durso before I change things up.

I know this wasn't directed at me but the answer is absolutely yes. If you pull everything from that t up and close that valve until the water level rises above the pipe, it will be absolutely silent. After that make tiny adjustments until the water barely goes down the emergency. I'm running the same setup, I actually figured id have to fiddle with it but its been basically untouched since august. If you do use that setup, get you a strainer to fit the main drain that way a snail or something doesn't get you an accidental clog.

The only tip I ran across that helped a little before just doing the Herbie was to run a piece of tubing down the drain to allow it to pull air so that you get less of that gurgling sound. It'll get you a tad more flow, but the only thing I ever found to help that noise was to turn the return pump down.

Okay, if playing with the valve and also shortening the pipe in the sump doesn't help , I can try what you are suggesting. Why did you think you had to fiddle with it? Is the water level on that style of overflow not always consistent?

Also, is the herbie silent at the sump because there is no air in the pipes? Like I said, I have no noise from my overflow box, just below in the sump.

let's see, If you want to keep the durso method , open the valve all the way & make the air hole bigger. If want to try the herbie bean method, then take off the elbow. With the valve wide open it's going to make a lot of noise. A Slowly close the valve until the water level rise above, rises until it stops sucking air over the top of the drain pipe. It will take some fine adjustments. there toward the end. if you leave the valve too open it will make noise if it's too closed it will overflow the 2nd pipe & make noise. Googgle herbie bean for more detail on how the they work. Speaking from experience they are a lot better than the durso ,can handle more flow & "can " run very quiet.
ps the end of the drain has to be a few inches under the water level in the sump. My opologies if I'm confusing You !

I understand what you are saying actually. question on the durso. What will the larger air hole do for me?

allow more air into the line. I "think"this quiets the gurgle. Sorry I can't explain the fluid dynamics of how it works. Try google for durso stand pipes. Much better explanations than I can give. Also check out Herbie Bean. Give You the choice. Point is, You have to turn the return pump down because of noise. If You could increase the amount of water thru the drain(without noise) You could turn the pump up for better turnover rates.

why use the dorso and just go straight Herbie- i did on my 180 and dont hear a thing.. check out this web site it will be very helpful for you! gmacreef.com

Cut the pipes in the sump where are just 1/2 to 1/4 inch under the water level so air can escape , that fixed my noisy overflow, it is worth a try.

Do you have the return submerged in the sump.

You say it’s silent up top but loud at the sump. I think you may be hearing splashing. If so extend your pipe into the sump

A siphon stop or cap for overflow is what I have used. additionally I wrap the pipes with pipe insulation for added noise muffling.

How do I stop the loud trickle?

You use a durso? My drain is 1.5 inches under the water line now. Less noise now, but too much water trickle up top

Hello, okay, so I was just about to pull off the elbow. I drilled a few holes up top, but it was still loud. So I started to close the valve, after closing it a bit more the sound went away. No bubbles. Even the trickle above went away because the water level rose. Tell me what you think. Is the overflow okay like this? Emergency pipe about an inch below water now.
