Sump thoughts

Don't do the refugium I'm starting to think that people have way to small refugiums to even work like it suppose to I think a sump full of live rock would work better or just use bio pellets and scrubber combo.

I would do miracle mud in the Refugium part if you want to use it. This how I ran it years ago but didn't se much of a change in my tank when I added it on. A deep send bed will do the same as miracle mud.

I agree with pretty much everything Luis said. With the exception of a sump packed with live rock. I believe in having a sump that only has the absolute minimum inside of it and is kept very clean.

+1 For pellets and scrubber combo.

Yea the only reason I said the sump full of live rock is because the bacteria population will be higher. There is a coral aqua farm somewhere in the states that only use live rock for filtration they just have lots of it and no skimmer, pellets or anything.

They have the set up to maintain and people to maintain the rocks and probably a rather larger CUC and probably a small bio load. In a sump set up I think it becomes more of a trap for detritus. In my opinion refugiums in standard sump set ups are insufficient. Using pellets increases bacterial populations.

Calvo,

Looking at your sump design though if you're going to run with a fuge and a section for "Miracle Mud" I would run them before the skimmer and let the natural things take care of what it can then let the skimmer remove what it can after that.

ill add in my $.02. I had a 20L sump. they are alot smaller that you may think on paper. Also, with regards to the return pump area, keep in mind this is where your water level will fluctuate. if you dont have an auto top off, you will have to add water every day to every other day.

I wouldn't run the skimmer after the refug u would be removing more pods and good nutrients then anything

I built a 20l sump for a buddy for his 55g and it wasn't really big enough to work effectively. It's nice to have but I don't think it was worth all the cost and effort. Once you make the chambers and room for overflow, then add rock sand pump, skimmer heater, you probably end up with less than 5g of volume left.
