Sump thoughts

There's always a point to a sump. While you may not add a lot of water volume to the system you're getting all of the equipment out of you DT and making its appearance much cleaner. Personally all I have in my sump is the skimmer, a heater and, the return pump.

That's true but if you expect it to be the complete filtration setup for your tank, you may be dissappointed, and your tank will suffer, but it's complicated just like anything we do to our complex and highly unnatural little ecosystems, it could work great, who knows, I'm just saying in my experience small sumps don't have much of a positive impact on a tank.

I have a 20 long sump on my 75g DT. I started out with just a skimmer section that I drained into, a fuge area for sand, rocks, and macro, and a return section. Before I added my pellet reactor I probably had 10-15 gallons in my sump. The reactor doesn't take up much of that volume. But, if I had it to do over, I would've went with a 40. I may change to a 40 when I move soon and set it back up.

The bigger the sump the better, obviously. In my opinion there is no such things as a 100% complete filtration system that we could incorporate into our artificial ecosystems. I consider my set up to be fairly adequate, but still is incapable of recreating nature. And that's where water changes come in, water changes are in my opinion the best thing we could do for our tank and inhabitants.

Running a sump is always going to be better than running everything HOB.

I wouldn't run the skimmer after the refug u would be removing more pods and good nutrients then anything

Just go with the Algae Turf Scrubber. You won't need all that other stuff. And the Skimmer would be a bonus. Also, with the ATS theres less crap you have to worry about cleaning or it floating around the tank.

+1 to these

Yea, you'll be fine that way. Just keep en eye on the media, it can turn into a Nitrate headache if it collects detritus.

Get a media bag and run purigen and also seachem has this thing call matrix I think is like a porous rock type media for nitrates I believe mr saltwatertank uses it.

Then again I do have something to add to this, if people think that running a sump doesn't matter or if there is a perfect filtration set up. Size in a sump does matter. In all actuality you should run a sump the same size as your DT, as this need to fill out with Macro Algae in order to be of any assistance.
But, if you ran a Algae Turf Scrubber along with a Skimmer and some Macro Algae, that would be all the filtration you would need in any system.

How can you do a Algae turf scrubber

Scrubbers require a good amount of room to be utilized correctly, my scrubber is only running at half strength because of room. There isn't enough room in this set up to run a scrubber, in my opinion. My scrubber is ran off of a manifold powered by my return pump, and Mike (gmoney) runs his off of his drains. And both ways require plenty of space.

And I would also consider removing the bio media.

I can say as a sump manufacturer that everyone's opinion on the perfect sump is very different. Do tanks require a sump, no. Do sumps make our systems any better, depends on who is maintaining the tank. I have seen lots of beautiful tanks that have been run with out a sump. But it does limit the system to having equipment hanging all over the tank's exterior. I personally like sumps because you can increase your water volume without increasing your aquarium size. I also like to have a refugium for not only pods/ect., but it also comes in handy to acclimate new fish to your system without dropping them into you main display for a few weeks. Refug's also allow you to take fish out that need separation.

We could all sit here and argue which design is better than the other, but in the end it is really what you are happy with that counts.

Get with gmoney. He's the local authority. Lol

Thx lol

+100 to this

I'm happy with this a Algae scrubber wold be cool but I don't thank I can put one in

Search on algaescrubber.net and look for plans on setting up a UAS might be best. UAS uses air stones and air pumps and is underwater. Or they now have some kind of floating scrubber that floats on water in DT or sump.
