That’s a hard one. Here is my smooth scoly.

My other scoly with some prickling

My acantho with classic ridging

And this is cynarina with classic translucent lobules

Homophyllia australis; Acanthophyllia is more inflated and has rough, concentric folds.

Symphyllia valenciennesii was reclassified to Lobophyllia in 2016. L. valenciennesii is more meandroid instead of solitary and looks more similar to Caribbean Mycetophyllia.

I agree with the thread title, and I am glad to see the healthy debate on a subject that I struggle with in coming to a conclusion that I am secure with.

This is a scoly. Acanthophyllia is far more wrinkly and has a different general color pattern. Scolies vary in texture from smooth to spiky, but the absence of vesicles sells it to me. Most scolies in-situ are this color pattern. I don't see how people confuse the two, but I am more of a meat coral nerd than most.

i sorta complained about this earlier….
like last week maybe, lol


all these badges confuse people

i see the most sound advice coming from people with zero badges

after all, when we first joined r2r,
these badges didn’t exist

now newbies get badges, spew info like they’re facts…
newbies take that advice because all the flashing lights blind them



but the sound advice from the 13yr r2r member gets swept away

(we’ve got things to say too!)

i see folks with tons of badges giving out the worst advice
every, dang…. day


mixing corals they’ve never owned
with “sound” advice



(another point to be made is this, the folks with the most badges end up washing out of the hobby before the ones that never really cared for them….. the former, faded away, like most reefers…. the latter is here for the long haul, they’re committed to this thing we do….,, so who is right and deserves [all] your arbitrary likes?!)

then watch someone else (with badges/clout) correct you, when you’re right, then watch them be praised for their erroneous information.


it’s the kind of mess that’ll make data less objective
and more subjective

because of a clique mentality


this isn’t unique to r2r,
it’s literally everything today…
globally


and i am so fatigued by it

(but i’ll for sure keep my secrets buttoned up from here on out!)

[because, what’s the point of preaching to deaf ears?!]


i’ll just tend to my scoly garden and keep these wizardly secrets to myself

(and rev, lol, i don’t want a badge… in fact, i wish you’d create an “anti-badge” for us types that are averse to labels)

I have a lot of fun on here, but if I have added to your fatigue(?) well please know right now that I'm a bit cross with myself and I have screamed a long string of cuss words at myself for adding to anyones stress. I am a stress case myself, lately. I think it's a symptom of post covid society and it bugs me too.

I never posted my first thought, which was Scoly (+2+) and for the life of me I don't know what this coral really is, for certain- but I do know it to be in a family that has a lot of physical fluidity in external characteristics, at least that's how I see it. Visual isn't my best means of id'ing, I have dyslexia and nerve damage from screen and drug interactions that render me unable to see properly which can really be a problem when I ask another person at the bar out to dinner and He says, "I ain't gay, so BACK off!"

Wow, got off track, but that's what happens when I'm stressed. So let's not stress over badges and authority or street cred or site cred, even the pillars of the hobby get asked ridiculously inane questions on here, or they are challenged as to their understanding of facts in the very realm where they have been legitimately recognized by friends and opponents alike as experts.

This is the internet. Don't let the mass of simple humanity confound your appreciation of the good aspects of the site.

Badges are definitely sign of followership, the only thing they mean to me is that someone valued them enough to go out of their way to get one...

I don't think the way to get people to listen to your opinion over any others is to throw a tantrum.

I personally am more inclined to listen to advice when the poster is articulate and can provide insight on the subject beyond what's being asked or discussed. That speaks louder than any badge out there.

P.S. an anti badge is still a badge.

I mean, nobody should mistake a hospitality badge as some sort of earned recognition of knowledge. Some, sure. But most badges are not indicators of knowledge or experience whatsoever.

not 90000 opinions, and the most popular get rewarded
and it seems folks (newbies) get confused by flashing lights and tend to take it as gospel

Sometimes the weak of the species need a visual diversion to reorganize their thoughts by distraction. A simple thought of perhaps going to the beach with your best buddies can help a person change their mind and think positively. I like GIF's for that purpose. Emoticons can also be helpful?

I think you're trying to point out that I didn't offer information to support my opinion as if that's some sort of "gotcha"?

I'm not an expert, but I know what a scoly looks like, and I know that this topic had been debated more than its fair share.

The difference being is that I'm not losing sleep over people not listening to my opinion or over people with dissenting opinions.

Is it a acanthophyllia? Possibly
Is it a scoly? Possibly
Is it a lobo? Possibly

Can I support any of those positions any further? NOPE! hence why I didn't offer anymore insight beyond what the OP asked.
