Picked this one up for a friend's tank today as a fresh arrival at a LFS. Got it before they unbagged it.

Love them. Those are beautiful fish. I want a pair of them one day. I'm maxed out of inhabitants at the moment though. Didn't I see a post of a pair of them in your tank?

you did, yes - i keep a pair in my nano. :)

and i could not agree more - they are incredibly cool fish. my pair beg for food much like a tang...or a puppy dog. :D

Cute! You're twisting my arm....forcing me to order a pair...:surrender:

devil's advocate...go for the candy basslets (liopropoma carmabi)! :D :D :D

I bought a swissguard for my 50 gallon tank 7-8 months ago and have only seen it 6-7 times since.
It's a very shy fish and spends most of it's time hiding.

sorry to hear that. i think a lot of it has to due with the other fish in the tank. if you have other very active fish, the liopropomas are very shy. i think a nano setting is ideal for these fish if you want to seem them frequently. if you watch my video, that's pretty typical behavior in my 28g with a very peaceful mix of fish and dim lighting. that's the other thing that may cause them to be shy - bright lights. they are indeed cave dwellers and like dim lighting.

The tank only has 2 bangaii cardinals and a rainsford goby.
The tank is pretty small ( atleast to me).
30" x 20" x20".
I have a gen 1 Radion, but it's on a 20k light program.
I did some research before I bought it and I did know it would somewhat shy, but didn't expect this

wow - that is pretty crazy! i guess as they say, each fish is definitely different. the larger one of mine is definitely more active and out swimming in the open more than the smaller one. but the smaller one i do see regularly also...and they're both voracious eaters.

So, I'm assuming that when you say a pair of them. You mean a male/female pair?
Or just 2 swissgaurds that could be same sex?

i bought them as a bonded pair. they posess both sexual parts, so i don't think you can consider one a male and one a female.

they don't really act much like a pair in my tank and rarely spend time together - there was some aggression at first, but that has settled. hoping that with more time they will re-bond.

i *did* happen to capture them both together in this photo:

i'm seriously tempted to set up another nano for a pair of candy basslets, i love these swissguards so much. i teetered on getting candies to begin with for this tank, but wanted to experience how this pair would work out before spending megabux.

Yeah at a $1k each, I think I would do a lot of research. lol

mfinn, adding another would force your existing inhabitant to come out more, establishing their territory and patrolling the area. Another thing you can do with shy fish, including Lipropoma spp., is place an oscillating fan near the tank and attach cheap 'party streamers' (used for birthday parties, etc.). You can also place a small radio in the stand and leave it on while you're away that will create slight vibrations. Both of these things will lead your fish to becoming more personable and out and about when you're around. I guarantee your little guy is out cruising the tank when you're out of sight.

C'mon guys, L. carmabi are only $600-700 retail these days ;)

stunreefer - awesome advice!

i have a cat who sits on the couch arm right next to this nano CONSTANTLY and is always batting at them. i watch her all day/night from across the room...pretty funny. fish don't seem to care, and might be part of the reason they are cruising so much.

also - i've always meant to tell you that your bandit angel avatar always makes me think of the stig. lol

So, your saying that it wouldn't be a disaster adding a second swissguard?

The store that I bought this one said they would fight to the death in my 50 gallon tank.
