So today my Deltec 1500ix came in to replace a less than two month old Nyos 220.
I’m sure most of you are going to read this and wonder why the switch after such little time and I’m here to tell you why..
Nyos: Initially I didn’t even want because of some of the things I’m about to go over and after two months of owning it I went with my gut to replace it. The skimmer works extremely well and pulls heavily dark and smelly skimmate. But to me a skimmer is more than just its function. Nyos did a poor job of designing this thing when it comes to maintenance. The water level adjustment pipe can not be disassembled for cleaning and after only two months I found mine heavily gunked up and I didn’t like that.
I also found it aggravating with how hard it was to twist the cup loose from the skimmer body even with using plumbers grease and spilt it on myself on multiple occasions. I’ve seen multiple reviews now of these skimmers having the cups essentially weld themselves to the body. These two things alone were enough to make me make the switch.
For function I give it a 9 as it does what it’s supposed to very well and for design I give it a 5. If I had to suggest it to someone I would say if the things I found to be negatives did not bother them then you can’t lose with this skimmer or ecotech support.
Deltec: Out of the box this thing is stout. Every single part of the skimmer breaks down fast and easy and is extremely cleanable. The manual neck cleaner is a nice touch as well as the cup drain line with valve that’s included as well as the emergency overflow design they incorporated. The physical feel of the skimmer feels sturdier and heavy duty compared to the Nyos. There is no cone shape so you get a full reaction chamber size which is another bonus. After having only ran it for a few hours so far it’s extremely quiet and easy to tune. Adam at Battlecorals was super informative and helpful with aiding me in making this decision as I was also considering Royal Exclusive. Deltec also has a USA support branch in Fort Lauderdale so you can deal with Adam or Deltec directly with concerns. I will update this thread as I go on the Deltec performance.
