Switching from Vodka to Biopellets

Why do you think you had to replace the pellets? All you do is allow the bacteria to consume them and all you do is top the reactor off.

Isn't topping off as same as replacing what the bacteria consumed? To me it's cheaper vodka dosing. I have more control if I see nitrates going to low I can back off vodka. Where bio pellets you can strip all the nitrates where I need to add amino acids.

I think from my reading that if pellets are used in a recirculating reactor you have the control needed to control the water going through the reactor and the also the output from the reactor into the skimmer intake, which gives you complete control similar to dosing vodka manually. Once you get the nitrates down You adjust the output from the reactor to just keep it maintain nitrates down to were you want it. The video in the previous post explains the process in further detail but that's what I'm currently trying to do, trying to find the sweet spot with the pellets and reactor. I imagine I'll have to do is just keep a close eye on my nitrates as they may go up some with new additions to the system or time or feeding changes. We'll see

Fixed by using one of the super salts that claims to have amino acids in them for water changes? I know Randy has insisted IF they work as claimed you would need to use the salt very quickly (and keep very dry) but that's not a problem when you are changing out 120g per month (like I some times do)

Not understanding super salt. What you are saying super salt have amino acid which means they salt will raise nitrates levels?

Nitrates and amino acids are two different things if i understand correctly. Amino acids = base proteins used as building blocks for cell structure. Nitrates = Nitrogenous waste fully oxadized which is a very specific compound of NO3 which is not readily used by complex life forms (although gardens and algae seem to like N03).

Red Sea Pro, HW marinemix, Tropic Marine etc. All claim to have more than just elevated levels of mg, ca, alk, they claim to have supplemental amino acids.

Randy Thinks if you store the salts long term such amino acids would just be consumed by bacteria in the salt bucket whie the manufactures claim that a bucket of salt is an extremely inhospitable place for bacteria and these amino acids are only available for consumption once the salt is mixed.....which i can buy into since i was raised earing country ham which basically was meat hung from a ceiling in a barn that stayed fresh because it was cured in salt.

Anyway your point is noteworthy as i just tested a batch of red sea pro freshly mixed to 1.025 with a 6 stage ro di (2 RO stages, a prefilter, 2 carbon blocks and 2 DI stages) and it tested positive around 1ppm of nitrates with a red sea own pro nitrate test kit.

Well i have been using the Ecobak Plus pellets which Jon Warner claimed to consume PO4 at a higher rate but unfortunately it seems to be the same as the other pellets in the market. The pellets strip the tank from Nitrates way quicker then PO4
I have a heavy fish load and feed heavy so the pellets are working to keep Nitrates at zero. The Phosphates I'm getting are from the dry rock leaching them out so after tons of research I ordered my Lanthanum C. and my 10 micron socks, let's see how this goes

All who participated please come back and post your experience with the biopellets!

Surprised to see a new response to this older thread. Just to update, I switched to BRS Biopellets and completely discontinued Vodka dosing. I couldn't be happier. My Nitrate holds steady now at 2-4ppm and no more daily dosing.

Here's a statement from Jon Warner in the Ecobak thread on here

"Running GFO while running bio-pellets is counter productive!!

That would only be true if phosphate become depleted so low it limited bacterial growth.
