Fins grow surprisingly fast if there is no aggression to persistently pick at them

Well I can't speak for that particular tang but I had a yellow years ago that was worse than that and it never grew back. Basically just had a stump from the bone where the top fin starts. Don't remember exactly but it was probably some form of HLLE that wiped out his top fin. Other than that, it was a healthy fish and lived a normal life.

Yours at least from pics looks like it is growing back.

For the sail fin I would think it would grow mostly back. I have a blue tang that was all beat up and missing huge chunks of his fin when I took him from the LFS. 9 months later he still has a little missing chunk that wont come back but it isnt too noticeable! Not sure about the scopas changing color but that one is probably the prettiest one Ive seen with the colors! I feed selicon (how ever its spelled, pinkish liquid for fish thats got a lot of good stuff for them)! Here is my blue tang now so you can see the spot Im referring to: it is right by his head on his top fin. Hard to see unless its pointed out, which might be the case with your sailfin!

The Scopus Tang looks normal. The Sailfin Tang will grow its fin back, but agree with @Rmckoy someone has a taste for that fish.

Every so often my sailfin has chunks missing from his fin .

Not to offend, but that is an awesome looking dorsal. If I had the tank for that fish, I'd get him

The two tangs are at Petco for several months. Eating well and fat as you can see. On arrival several months ago the Sailfin got some sort of fin rot. They were able to treat and save him but the damage dorsal fin does not seem to grow back. He also developed HLLE but this have improved. Thred is still a little HLLE on the body.
Two separate tanks. I kinda like the color of the Scopas but I think he will get darker when he get into my tank with better water and stable tank.

Both will fix in the right circumstances - Healthy diets and minimal aggression and these guys will feel secure and heal rather quickly.

I disagree there buddy.. I have a scopas and a sailfin in my 180.. they ignore each other.. as well as the blue hippo and the fiji yellow

I have a sailfin , yellow , blue and an orange shoulder and they all get along . And never have seen fin damage to this extent

possible for it to some regrowth, but I wouldn't count on full fin recovery. it's not floating, looks healthy. the hlle can be treated as well.

It was not injury but the lost of the fin was due to fin rot.
I don’t think it will grow back.

My Scopus years ago turned almost completely black and was quite beautiful. Ate well too.
Doubtful fin will grow back but I wouldn't hesitate with either or both.
Fat tangs are happy and long lived tangs.
I've always been a sucker for the weird and unwanted.

I’ve often thought of doing exactly this .
But adding fish is a nightmare .

Wonder how @vetteguy53081 was able to add so many tangs without any aggression

Some damage never repairs, depends on the original cause.
But this does not mean a fish will not survive or thrive.
I have a blue with a tail that got munched 5 years ago.
It’s still that way today.

The fin spines toward the dorsal front are very difficult to repair in fish. The fin rays easily grow back.

Nice looking scopas. I got a nice one from my "local" Petco a few years ago too.

for sailfin, maybe and MAYBE slight growth but there will not be restoration in full. It is very common to see battered yellow tangs with almost no dorsal fin and they never grow back, yet the fish lives a normal and healthy life- Just odd looking. Scopas will be a good fish. Realize both the scopas and especially sailfin can be nasty buggers and reap havoc with other tankmates especially at feeding time. I have three tank jerks and sailfin is #2 and scopas not even a consideration for my tang gang.
