Tanks for Teacher Program Lakeridge Highschool Tank

I'm a high school science teacher and I just started a year long coral growing project. While there isn't a formal program in my area, local hobbyists have been helpful in selling equipment for cheap, and the kids just held a dance last night to raise money. The kids love their tank and I've never seen a couple of them so excited about anything like they are with their tank.

That's awesome! Where are you located? Do you have a local club? Do you have any pictures? I would love to see pictures of what other people are doing. We have 5 schools right now from grade school to high school!

I'm right on the Maine/New Hampshire border (I live in ME, but work in NH), and we have two local forums who occasionally get together for swaps but they are both fairly new and getting their footing. Right now we have one tank that just finished the cycle, and I actually just bought another tonight because the kids want to split up into boys vs girls to see who can get their coral to grow better lol. I'll take some pictures at school this week, but it's pretty bare right now...

Ha ha! That's great! Way to get them interested! I can't wait to see pictures! :)

Pioneer School Update

I stopped by today to do a water change on the Pioneer school tank. I try to make it out there every 4 to 6 weeks. One of the teachers, Becky does the day to day maintenance and we got an autofeeder which has cut down greatly on the overfeeding problem.

Becky gets water from a local pet store for free to top off the tank.

The Mono died. It was one of the first fish we added with the clownfish. She thinks maybe the Diamond Goby was picking on it but otherwise everything else looks great! 1smile1

This tank has been up almost 2 years and is near and dear to me because it is a school for special needs children and I have seen what a calming affect the tank can have.

I am really proud of our club and how well this tank has done. There has only been a few fish lost and minimal livestock :clap2:

The staff really loves watching the cinnamon clown hosting this GBTA. What's not to love?

All of the softies are faring well. All of these were supplied from donations from local reefers. I tried to stick with hardier corals.

Seeing all of the Halloween books brought back memories!

Thanks again sponsors and members of the PNWMAS! I would love to see what other clubs are doing in their area. I will post up some more pictures soon. I have to go to the Lakeridge High school and add some livestock!

I am currently a high school science teacher in North Florida and im struggling to get a tank going in my room FOWLR, its expensive going out of pocket for everything at home and at school. This is absolutely astounding! Any info you could send me on groups or how to get one started would be amazing.

It is expensive. Is there a local saltwater hobbyist club in your area? If so, I would start by checking in with them. I have found that fish stores and hobbyists are more than happy to donate time and energy. We also have a paypal account set up and we will auction off corals from time to time.

okay awesome, a local shop owner kind of offered but i guess i have been shy about asking. Ill be a bit more ontop of it i think and see what they say about helping out, thanks.

You're welcome and good luck to you! You will be amazed at how generous people in this hobby are,

Lakeridge High School Update

Just thought I would show you some updated pictures of the Lakeridge High School tank. This one was just set up in September. The parameters are off because the support person who helped them last year graduated to college. I do what I can but this tank is farther from my home and the Pioneer tank takes the bulk of my time. I find with these tanks, it helps to have a member of the club who is a contact/support person. We have a new one so I'm sure in no time this tank will look sweet.

Brought over some fish today and a seahare. The teacher wanted schooling fish so I got her 5 Bangii Cardinals. I also got her a Sailfin tang and seahare to help with the algae. I have had them in quarantine for 2 weeks and they are eating well.

There's a fair amount of algae on the rocks but not surprising since the rock was dried out. The corals are pretty stressed too but the salinity has been running high and the alk is running low and they were transferred from one tank to another and have lived through the cycling process. The water is also a bit cold as the heater is not working well. Honestly things don't look bad considering the parameters are off. Now with Shaun (Shauno on this forum) and Re-run offering to be contact people this will be one sweet setup

The students love the tank and they have been dilligently testing

A 20 gallon water change should help!

All done! Tank looks a little bare but I will add more corals when the parameters are more stable. These are the "before" pictures. I will post updates as it comes along!

Awesome this is great!

Pioneer School Update

Another water change and almost another year and Pioneer School is doing great!

I didn't do a before picture because the tank glass was pretty dirty but this is from the last time I was there in October and there was quite a bit of algae on the powerheads

DSC02053ARW.jpg

Powerheads all cleaned up 1smile1 It's amazing how much more flow is coming through the powerheads

DSC03153ARW.jpg

The water is a little cloudy because the skimmer pump was disconnected and also because I had just cleaned the glass. I don't use a filter sock for simplicity and the tank does very well without one.

Amazingly this GBTA has not moved since it was placed here many months ago!

This tank has almost been up 2 years now! This tank is near and dear to my heart because it is a special needs school with many children with communication difficulties but they light up and ask questions about the fish , the tank, and the coral!!
