That is ambitious, but it sounds like you have things under control. Total money, not including tools.. LOL!

Yikes that is ambitious and I have some carpentry experience. You don;t by chance have a friend or family who could help you make the outer parts of the stand and canopy.. that will be hard to do. Also +1 on adding a central brace. :) Glad to see you have the motivation.. I am far too lazy to pull something this awesome off.

The lumber has been fairly inexpensive so far. The pocket hole jig was $40. I had a drill and skill saw so that saved me a little. I wish I had a table saw, this would have been so much easier.

I don't know anyone with woodworking experience so I'm on my own for this one. I grew up with a single mom so I was usually the one fixing things around the house. I became fairly handy so I think this will turn out ok.

The outer part of the stand turned out nicely. It needs the doors, molding, and some stain to be finished. I'll be building the doors so that can wait until after we move on Friday. I'll get pics up tonight after work

Everyone seems to like my idea of the pull out drawer to put stuff on while working in the tank and to rest your elbows (or beer) on while gazing at the tank. If you decide to go that route, I'd suggest spending the extra $$ on ball bearring slides instead of the ones with the little wheel. They support substantially more weight and slide much smoother. Here's a few pics of how I incorporated them into mine:

Wow. That is great looking! Great idea for the slide out drawers!

get a straight edge cutting clamp/tool from habour frieght. Its like $50 but its about 4 feet long and will clamp to sheet to ply so you can run you saw up against it for a nice clean cut. If you can get you hands on a router your cuts will be even cleaner.

A router and clamps of any kind would be great. I just can't afford more tools right now because were movin in 4 days an the deposits on the apartment wiped me out

Love the drawers Swanny...i have always thought that is a killer idea. Drew - Hope things work out for you!! I think you have a great idea of a sweet looking stand!

Holy cow swanny that's really nice. I think I'll have to say +1 to drawers from now on... they do look like they'd serve quite a bit more than I ever though.

Good luck on the move Drew!

Thanks guys. It will definitely be a project in it's own. I've got to downsize the 180 to the 125 I'm building this stand for, my 55 reef, and our 30 gal planted freshwater tank. Should take all day lol.

I like the slide out tray idea, but my current plan puts a refugium above my sump with my return plumbing hugging the bottom of the tank so it's out of the way for more access to everything under the sump. Last time I used vinyl hose and it was a much quicker install, but with the location of my sump and returns it always ended up in the way.

I tried snapping a few pictures last night of the stand progress, but a light blew in the room and I didn't have a spare bulb. Ill try to get some more pics today
