I currently have two clowns in my tank. I’m worried about the temp. I had my heater set at 77 degrees, and just moved it down to around 75. This is because the temperature is at 81.5 right now. What do i do? I have loved it down a few times, but it continues to be higher than what I want

Can be a faulty heater or a faulty thermometer. Most likely faulty heater. I would get a cheap $2 thermometer from the pets section of walmart to verify the water temp if you are not confident just cause that is a cheaper option. Then I would replace the heater if temp really is significantly higher than heater set to (I am assuming here it is not hooked up to a controller and just a standalone heater).

Confused, do you mean you set the heater to one temp but it’s heating to a higher temp than you set?

Either buy a controller, or calibrate your heaters, or just mess with them till you get the temp you want, I would recommend the controller route.

77f is fine, if that is the temp you want, if your tank is at 81.5 it’s at the top of where you want it, not dangerous but I would look to get it down from there.

Yes, I have the heater set at 75 currently, because last night I checked and it was at 80.2. Ok, that’s fine. Now, I checked a minute ago. And it’s at 81.5!!!!!!!! My heater was 25$. It’s an eheim, and I have a temp probe on it. Before turning it down to 75 a couple minutes ago, I had it set at 77

I use a inkbird controller. Only thing I don't like is it let's the tank drop 1* below the target temp before it turns the heaters on. So my tank cycles between 78and 77 all day
Arent they 40$? It’s a completely new heater

If it is a new heater I would return it if it is not working properly. It may just be the scale is way off. IE when you set it at 77 it thinks it is set to 80 and then you can compensate by adjusting to 74 to keep it at 77 as an example. It could also be that it is faulty and the heating element is just stuck on (have had that happen multiple times). In that scenario you cant really compensate for it. Controllers however would cut power to the heater when it gets to the set temp and turn it back on when below a setpoint (varies by controller) so it is not as big of a concern if the heater element itself is stuck on.

I moved my temp probe away from the equipment and such, right to the middle of the tank where most water is lol. One measures 81.0, the other is 81.1.

For now, my newer opened probe is at 80.8. I am going to measure it later tonight, and tomorrow morning, and see the difference between what it’s set at and what is actually is

Time for a new heater. I have a new one on hand at all times. I discontinue using my old one when it reaches two years old. This is only a preventative measure, as this is the number one failure point in a reef tank. Sorry your having issues, it’s frustrating.

Do you have a glass lid on the tank? Did you notice if the heater was running when the temp was high? When I had glass lids on the tank, the trapped heat from the lights, combined with the heat produced by my equipment (return pump, power heads, fuge light, etc... and the ambient room temp drove the tank temp higher than I liked. When I went to a mesh top, it was much easier to control.

How do I do that?

the Red ring is the calibration ring, start with it in the half way position, you get a bucket of water, set the temp to say 75, heat the water till it stops heating, check the temp if it’s say 78 you move the Red ring slightly.

As said I failed at it, gave up, you may have better luck.

Those Eihem Jager rely on old contact technology.
Get yourself a good digital heater like Cobalt for example and add the Inkbird or Ranco controller for safety.

I have several eheim jager heaters in various tanks and their great little heaters for the money. To calibrate mine I put it in a bucket of water and heat it until the light turns off. I test the temp of the water and say it's 81. I move the red dial to point to 81. I set it to 78 and place in a different bucket and test the temp when the light turns off. If it's good I put it to use. But now that I have discovered titanium heaters I will be replacing all heaters with them.

81 is perfectly fine. My tank runs at 80-82 in the summer, and that's a natural temperature for coral reefs. In some places the water gets even warmer.

See I doubt understand that as the Red dial doesn’t cover the full scale? You can only move it a little compared to the blue ring?
